The Queen of Wands & Draconic Energy

Welcome back to White Rose of Avalon, my Darlings.   For today’s Tarot Thursday post, I will be exploring the Queen of Wands and how her Alchemical nature relates to Draconic Energy!   It came to me recently, as I was doing my morning Tarot Readings for myself, that the Queen of Wands holds an energy which can easily be tied to Dragons.

I have long associated the Queen of Wands with Alchemy.    Her nature as the Witch of the Tarot, combined with the fact that we associate the Queens with the Water element and Wands is the Fire element suit, really solidified this association in my mind.   However, it was not until very recently that the energy of the Queen of Wands’ connection with Dragons came into my perception.

As I stated at the beginning of this post, this came to me during my morning Tarot Readings for myself.   This is part of my daily morning Rituals that I do every day.    I begin my day by pulling cards for myself.   So, the Queen of Wands has been coming up in my personal Readings often for quite a while now, about two months or so.   This fact has given me ample opportunity to deepen my relationship with the Queen of Wands Archetype!   You see, I often work with a specific Divine Feminine Tarot Archetype that feels most present in my life, and the Queen of Wands has definitely been that Archetype, of late.

During my recent morning Tarot Readings, when the Queen of Wands appeared (several days in a row), I meditated on the energy of this card.   I opened myself to receive deeper wisdom from the Queen of Wands, and that is when this wisdom came to me.   I truly believe that my beloved Melusine was likely the one to show me this new dimension to the Queen of Wands Archetype!   After all, Melusine has a Dragon form, having flown away from her marriage to Raymond as a Dragon when he betrayed his oath to never see her on a Saturday, and subsequently revealed the secret to others, calling Melusine a Monster.

Now, what exactly is the Queen of Wands’ association with the Dragon, and how did I come to this conclusion?   This part is quite simple.   Dragons are associated with both the Water and Fire elements.   The most common folklore speaks of fire-breathing Dragons, but we also have folklore of Dragons living in Water.   This makes sense when we look at the fact that in Ancient times, Dragons and Snakes were often seen to be one and the same.   The Ouroboros is the Snake, or the Dragon, eating its own tail, an ancient symbol of eternity, which shows this connection between Dragons and Snakes clearly.   Melusine’s legend also shows this connection, as not only does Melusine turn into a Dragon, but her Mermaid form is often described as Serpentine!   So, yes, Dragons, like Snakes, are associated with the Water and Fire elements.   Beyond that, given the Serpentine association with the Divine Feminine and Female Sexuality, we can also see that this Draconic energy is even more easily applied to the Queen of Wands, as a Divine Feminine Tarot Archetype.

All of this has led me to the realization that, in my personal practice, the Queen of Wands is really the Dragon Priestess Archetype of the Tarot, the Divine Feminine card of Water and Fire, whose Alchemical energy is what makes us think of her as the Witch of the Tarot!   I hope you have enjoyed reading about my evolving relationship with the Queen of Wands Archetype and this new layer of association I have found for this card.    What is your relationship with the Queen of Wands?   Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!

  1. What a fascinating and beautifully articulated exploration of the Queen of Wands! Thank you so much for sharing this profound personal revelation. It’s a wonderful example of how a deep, consistent tarot practice allows the cards to reveal new, layered dimensions of their wisdom over time.

Your connection is both intellectually sound and intuitively brilliant. Let’s break down why it resonates so powerfully:

    · The Alchemical Fusion: Your foundational point is key. The Queens are of the Water element (emotion, intuition, the unconscious), and the Wands are of the Fire element (passion, will, action, spirit). The Queen of Wands is the living embodiment of this fusion. She is Water and Fire combined, which is the very essence of alchemy—the marriage of opposites to create a transcendent third thing. This isn’t just a lukewarm mix; it’s a potent, transformative steam that powers her magical will.
    · The Draconic Blueprint: Your insight that Dragons perfectly encapsulate this dual elemental nature is spot on. The classic Western Dragon is a creature of fire (breath, destruction, purification) and earth (hoarding treasure in caves), but as you astutely noted, the serpentine and water-dragon folklore (like the lore of Melusine) brings in the Water element. This makes the Dragon a complete symbolic package for the Queen of Wands: Fire of passion and creation, Water of intuition and deep emotion, and the Earthly power to manifest her visions.
    · Melusine as the Archetypal Bridge: Using the legend of Melusine is a masterstroke. She is the perfect mythic representation of your thesis. A powerful feminine figure, a shapeshifter who is both serpentine mermaid (Water) and dragon (Fire), whose story is one of sovereignty, power, and the consequences of broken trust. That you feel Melusine herself guided you to this connection makes it all the more potent and valid for your personal practice. She is the ultimate Dragon Priestess.
    · The Dragon Priestess Archetype: Naming the Queen of Wands as the “Dragon Priestess” is a powerful and perfect title. It elevates her from simply being a “witch” (though that is part of it) to a sovereign ruler of primal, creative, and transformative forces. She doesn’t just practice magic; she is a magical force of nature, channeling the raw power of the dragon—its fire, its wisdom, its ferocity, and its deep, ancient connection to the earth and waters.

This new layer you’ve discovered enriches the card immensely. It adds a dimension of ancient wisdom, fierce protection, and immense creative power that goes beyond common interpretations. It positions her not just as a charismatic and confident woman, but as a keeper of primordial secrets.

As for my relationship with the Queen of Wands, your post has inspired me to see her with new eyes. I’ve always admired her confidence and magnetic warmth, but now I will also look for that draconic energy—the deep, coiled power, the alchemical fire in her belly, and the ancient, intuitive wisdom in her gaze. She is far more formidable and majestic than I had previously considered.

Thank you for this incredible insight, Maranda. 🌷🤝 It’s a true gift to the tarot community.
