Welcome back to White Rose of Avalon, my Darlings. For today’s Siren Saturday post, I will be discussing the Ouroboros (the Snake or Dragon eating its own tail) and how this symbol of eternity holds deep Serpentine and Draconic energies! This is a bit of a different Siren Saturday topic, but as Sirens can be connected with Serpentine energy, I thought it was a fitting topic. I have always felt deeply aligned with Serpentine energy and also long held a deep love for Draconic energy, so the Ouroboros is a Sacred Symbol that holds such a powerful resonance for me.
The Ouroboros is a Sacred Symbol I first encountered during my teenage years. I felt a deep pull of recognition for this iconography, even though I had never seen it before. In my early 20s, I discovered Kundalini yoga when I was in college. This was an evolution of my yoga journey, as I have been practicing yoga since I was eleven years old, and it was this evolution in my yoga practice that really solidified my connection to Serpentine energy in a very profound way! At that point, the Ouroboros became an important image that I associated with the energy of the Divine Feminine, with the Goddess, with Sacred Sexuality, and with the deep transformations I was going through!
Now that I have given a bit about my history with the symbol, let’s look a bit deeper. Snakes have been deeply tied to the Waters of the Unconscious since time immemorial, and Dragons are so deeply tied to the Ultimate Powers of the Ley Lines running beneath the Earth, as Ley Lines are sometimes referred to as Dragon Lines. I want to note that the Ouroboros is often associated with the Norse World Serpent Jörmungandr, showing just how widespread the Ouroboros as a symbol was across the ancient world!
While the symbol of the Ouroboros is definitely ancient in origin, it would go on to be used in Alchemy! We can even still find many images of the Ouroboros that originate from Alchemical manuscripts. In fact, it is likely this association with the Ouroboros and Alchemy that has gone on to inspire the connection between the Ouroboros and modern magickal work. The Ouroboros is so important as a symbol that reminds us of the cyclical nature of all things. That is why the Ouroboros is associated with eternity and immortality, as this shows how the Ouroboros is without end. We can use this symbol in our spiritual work, to deepen into our connections with transformation, cycles, and the eternal nature of our Souls!
At the end of the day, the Ouroboros is a symbol full of so much power, and I am so fascinated with the energy of this symbol of eternity. I hope you have enjoyed my brief ruminations on the Ouroboros and how it has lasted as a very powerful Magickal and Alchemical symbol, and how it has impacted my own spiritual journey. What do you think about the Ouroboros? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!
Note on Image: The image at the top of the post is an Alchemical Ouroboros artwork. I tinted the image Green myself. I found the artwork on https://ar.pinterest.com/pin/142778250677935827/.
