Welcome back to White Rose of Avalon, my Darlings. For today’s blog post, I will be sharing a list of some of my favorite films to watch in early Autumn! Of course, given my love of fantasy, these films all have a magickal energy. To be clear, these are not films necessarily set in Autumn, but rather films that feel cozy and a bit spooky, with a dash of magick, all things I associate with early Autumn. Without further ado, let’s look at the list!
Labyrinth (1986)
~This 80s fantasy classic is one that captured my heart as a child, and I have never stopped rewatching it. The story is a classic fairy tale, in a very Faerylore sense. A baby captured by the Goblin King and a teenage girl out to save him. Of course, there is a lot of depth to the story, as it is also an examination of the fear of growing up and a coming-of-age story. Not to mention the complexity of puberty and sexual awakenings that are implied beneath the surface. Yet again, this is very much something that feels like old Faerylore! It is cozy, it is fun, and it is much deeper than many people realize.
The Craft (1996)
~Of course, I could not make a list of Magickal films to watch at this time of year without including this 90s staple. Here we have it all: a high school setting giving back-to-school vibes, iconic 90s fashion, and a clique of high school outsiders who are really a coven of Witches! Add in the needle drop of the Love Spit Love cover of How Soon is Now? (which was later used as the Charmed theme song) and the battle of wills between the coven leader and the natural witch, and you have a must-watch.
Practical Magic (1998)
~Anyone familiar with this blog knows that this is likely my most rewatched film of all time. So, of course, this most beloved witchy cult classic is a staple all year long. The story of the Owens women is an ideal one to watch for all of the cozy vibes you can want. Beyond that, this film is special for its focus on the power of family, deep female friendships, and true sisterhood!
Maleficent (2014)
~For the dark fairytale vibes, I have to recommend this 2014 villain origin take on Sleeping Beauty. However, the 1959 classic animated film is also a wonderful choice for its woodland scenes that always feel very Autumnal to me. Either way, you are getting plenty of dark Faery Magick! The 2014 film also gives some cozy sweetness in the blossoming of a maternal love, which is so beautiful to see.
Beetlejuice (1988)
~Of course, I had to include a Tim Burton classic on the list, and this 1988 film is perfect for early Autumn. It has all the cozy energy of a lovely small town, with all of the chaos and surrealism that can take you into the spookier part of the season! The sweetness of Lydia’s relationship with Adam and Barbara is what gives this one so much heart.
Stardust (2007)
~Okay, I just had to add one more fairytale film here. This one is highly underrated, in my opinion. It is such a delightful fantasy tale of a young man going on an adventure to find a fallen star for the woman he wishes to marry, which sees him pulled into a fantastical Otherworld! There are wicked witches, Pirates that ride storms, and a really sweet love story at the heart of this film.
The Addams Family (1991) & The Addams Family Values (1993)
~The final entry on the list is actually two, as I think this is the ideal Autumn double feature for a movie night. The 90s version of the story of the spookiest family is one that many have grown up with, myself included. There are definitely some dark magick vibes here, along with the morbid and macabre energy. However, there is also the deeply heartfelt energy of a family that truly loves one another.
