Welcome back to White Rose of Avalon, my Darlings. For this week’s Siren Saturday, I have decided to share another entry in my Incarnated Mermaid Diaries series. Today’s topic is The Joy of My Birthday Month!
So, this is the first Siren Saturday of September, and the last Siren Saturday before my birthday, which is on the eighth. That is what inspired me to write this post today. You see, even as an adult, I am someone who has always loved her birthday. Whether it is a big celebration, like a party, or just an intimate night with my husband, I adore my birthday! Birthdays hold power for us, and that is especially true for magickal practitioners. Old traditions like making a wish when blowing out a candle are remnants of the true magick of a birthday! Wishes made and intentions set on the day of our birth hold an extra punch of potency. Of course, many hold on to the fear of growing older that is ingrained in us in Western society. I have broken with this fear long ago, and instead view birthdays as a time to be happy that you get to live another year and feeling gratitude about all that has passed in the previous year. It may sound simple, but looking back on your achievements each year and feeling grateful for all that you have done really does put into perspective that growing older does not have to be something to fear.
Beyond my own birthday, the whole month of September tends to be joyful and full of celebratory energy, as my birthday is at the beginning of the month, and then my husband, Andrew, and my best friend, Daisy, have birthdays at the end of September. Andrew even thought about how our birthdays are so close together when choosing my engagement ring. You see, I have never been a diamond person, so I always wanted an engagement ring that did not have a diamond. So, Andrew chose a lovely sapphire for my ring, a reference to both of our birthdays, and a color of the depths of the Ocean (a reference to my Mermaid Soul)! Yes, needless to say, September birthdays certainly held sway with that decision to have my engagement ring have the birthstone we share in it.
The fact that Andrew, Daisy, and I share a birthday month means that we all like to pick a weekend to celebrate all three of our birthdays together each year. There is something really special about having my birthday fall in the same month as two of my favorite people! Even before Andrew and Daisy came into my life, I had two other special people who had birthdays in September. My Godmother and my favorite Aunt both had birthdays in early September. In fact, my favorite Aunt’s birthday was the day before mine, and she loved to joke about how she wished I was born a day earlier, so that we would have shared a birthday. This interaction would always cause my mother to laugh and tell her that I wanted my own birthday! Maybe that is part of why I have always loved my birthday and my birthday month so much, because I have always shared the celebrations that month with loved ones.
This September is also a bit extra special, as we have Practical Magic 2 coming out in less than a week now. Daisy and I have been eagerly awaiting this sequel since it was announced. We are both huge fans of the first film, and I remember being so excited when I heard that the film was premiering between our birthdays. It seemed like an ideal confluence of events.
Beyond the birthdays, September 13th is also the anniversary of the White Rose of Avalon Online Shop officially opening, and this year will be the second anniversary! I have to admit I chose that date because 13 is my lucky number, and because two years ago September 13 was a Friday the 13th. However, having my shop’s anniversary (or my shop’s birthday, if you will) in the same month as my own, my husband’s, and my best friend’s does make the month even more special. Yes, for me, there is so much to be joyful about and grateful for this month!
