Welcome back to White Rose of Avalon, my Darlings.   For today’s Femme Fatale Friday, I will be exploring Siren energy from three different parts of the world via the Lorelei, the Rusalka, and the Merry Maids!

I thought that this topic would be a great follow-up to this past Mermaid Monday post about embracing Siren energy in September.   In this case, I will be looking at different types of Siren energy through the folklore of three different types of Mermaids!   Without further ado, let’s look at three types of Sirens. 

Lorelei

~The Lorelei is the Mermaid of the Rhine River in Germany.   She is sometimes viewed as a singular Mermaid, or sometimes there are multiple Loreleis.   It is hard to tell, as she appears alone as a Solitary Faery.   However, no matter if there is only one Lorelei, or many, she has a reputation for being dangerous.   Lorelei lures men sailing on the Rhine River to their deaths on the rocky shores of the River.   In fact, there is a large rock that bears her name, and it is said that this is the rock she sits upon as she sings her Siren’s Song, luring the unlucky men to their watery graves.   So, as we can see, the Lorelei falls squarely in the position of a traditionally dangerous Siren in folklore.   That being said, I have always thought she was much more complex than that.   In my own experience, her energy feels much more like a protector of the River, a protector of her domain.   But that is simply my personal gnosis.       

Rusalka

~The Rusalka is a Slavic Siren known to reside in bodies of water, usually Lakes and Rivers, who lures individual men into the depths.   She appears as a beautiful and naked young woman, covered only by her hair.   Her alluring beauty is meant to catch the eye of passing men, and if they take her up on her offer and enter her waters, she will drown them!   Once again, her folklore shows her as the classically dangerous Siren.   However, it should be noted that she is known to drown married men who are proving their unfaithful hearts by taking her up on her offer of intimacy.    In this way, I think of her as a protector of women, especially wives.   It should also be noted that the Rusalki (plural of Rusalka) were not always viewed as malevolent.   In fact, in old Pagan Russian customs, they were left offerings to ensure the fertility of the land.  

Merry Maids

~The Merry Maids of Cornwall are far from the traditional image of a Siren.   Their folklore does not depict them as luring men to their deaths.   Yet, in one of the most famous Merry Maid stories, The Mermaid of Zennor, our titular Merry Maid does enchant a man and take him away.   So, I consider the Merry Maids to be a more benevolent type of Siren, for she still enchants and steals a human man away from his home.   However, this Mermaid takes Matthew Trewalla into the Sea to be her husband!   There is love there, and he does not die.   Far from it, he gets to live with his wife and children beneath the Sea!   

~All three of these types of Sirens can show us the power of having a protective nature.   If we think of the Lorelei as a potential protector of the River and the Rusalka as a potential protector of women, their dangerous energy is put into a new perspective.   Similarly, the Merry Maids may take human lovers and enchant them into the Sea, but they are not killing them; rather, they are holding them in a protective and loving embrace!   Of course, these are my interpretations from reading the folklore and working with these Mermaids.   That being said, I would caution those who are just starting out working with Fae against seeking out contact with more dangerous Fae without guidance.   It takes time to build relationships with the Fae, and respect is always of the utmost importance!   In fact, that is part of why I will be offering Mermaid Magick Spellworkings soon, as I want to be able to safely guide clients into a relationship with the Water Fae they wish to work with.
