Welcome back to White Rose of Avalon, my Darlings. For today’s blog post, I will be exploring seasons as associated with Otherworldly Beings. This is something that I have been thinking about a lot over the last year or so. You see, I have always associated specific types of Fae with specific Wheel of the Year holidays, but I have been seeing that there are larger overarching energies of Otherworldly Beings tied to specific seasons, and that is what I want to share with you here today!
SPRING: Woodland Faery
~I will begin with the season of Spring, which I associate with Faeries. Now, I know that this is a very broad category of beings, which I always like to specify to people, given my deep work with the Fae. However, in the case of this seasonal breakdown, I am specifically talking about Flower Faeries, Nymphs, and other Woodland-type spirits, rather than the broad category of Faery. That is why you see the term Woodland Faery written above. This category is speaking to the general way that people think of Faeries when they hear the word. The winged Faeries and the Faeries who nurture plants, trees, and Sacred Waters. Faeries as Nature protectors and as spirits tied to Nature is the energy I think is deeply tied to the blossoming energy of Spring!
SUMMER: Mermaid
~Of course, my beloved Water Faeries, the Mermaids, had to be aligned with Summer. This is the season when most people think of Mermaids, for it is the time when they are most likely to go to the beach! Of course, just like with each of these categories discussed in this post, Mermaids can be worked with and felt all year long, but their energy peaks in Summer. The reason their energy is peaking in Summer has to do with the fact that a greater number of people are thinking of Mermaids and hearing their Siren’s Song during this season. Mermaids and their deep ties to fertility, playfulness, and enchantment of the Aquatic Realms are definitely thought of as aligned with Summer’s abundant energy. We even see Mermaids appearing in Summer decor in seasonal sections at stores, showing the fact that Mermaids are likely tied to Summer in the Collective Unconscious.
AUTUMN: Vampire
~I could not think of another broad category of Otherworldly Beings that are more obviously tied to Autumn than Vampires. To be clear, Vampires themselves can be seen as a broad category, not just because we have several types of Vampires (including the energy variety), but because of the various types of Vampiric Fae. Beyond Vampiric types of Fae, I also include Fae associated with Death here. So, examples of Fae associated with this season include the Leanan Sidhe (as the Faery Lover is Vampiric, feeding off of the energy of her lover), the Bean Sidhe (or Banshee), and the Washer at the Ford, to name a few. Just like the other seasonal Otherworldly Beings, Vampires are found in folklore all over the world for centuries, proving that their energy is deeply felt. In the case of Autumn, when the plants are dying off, we turn to thinking of the energy of things that are waning and ending, making the energy of Vampires and Death-related Fae pronounced!
WINTER: Werewolf
~Finally, we end with Winter as the season I associate with the Werewolf. Werewolves are powerful Otherworldly Beings whose strength can lend to surviving during the harshness of Winter. Beyond that, Shapeshifters of various sorts can be linked to Shapeshifting in the Astral Realms, a powerful meditative practice. Of course, more people are practicing internal meditative practices during Winter, when we feel the natural desire to go within. So, yes, the strength and physical power of the Werewolf, and other Shapeshifters that would also fit the energy of Winter, show an ability to survive during harsh weather. This connection with Winter is increased when we think of Shapeshifting as a spiritual practice that is tied to going within and doing meditative work!
~I hope that you have enjoyed this breakdown of how I associate the seasons with specific Otherworldly Beings and their energy. What other Otherworldly Beings do you see aligned with the seasons? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!
