Welcome back to White Rose of Avalon, my Darlings. For today’s Mermaid Monday blog post, I will be discussing the magick of the Mermaid’s Comb in Mysticism!
While many of us think of a Mermaid’s Comb as a symbol of her nature as a figure of beauty, with the comb being a tool of beauty, there is so much more to the comb than that. A Mermaid’s Comb is a Sacred Tool, just as her mirror is. Also, like her mirror, a Mermaid’s Comb is a tool of communication and Oracular insights.
You see, where a Scrying Mirror can be a tool to see the future or travel to another realm, a Mermaid’s Comb is a tool that can call forth a Mermaid. That is why we even read in folklore of Mermaids gifting a comb to someone who saved them. This is because when the comb is used in the water, it can summon the Mermaid to you. That makes the Mermaid’s Comb a very potent tool of communication and communion with the Mermaids. The tool that most of us think of as one of hygiene and beauty becomes a much more important symbol of the Mermaid’s power, and is even tied to the granting of wishes, given that this tool can be gifted to one who is worthy of the Mermaid’s favor!
A famous example of a folktale showing the power of a Mermaid’s Comb is the Cornish story of The Mermaid and the Old Man of Cury. In this tale, a man named Matthew Lutey helps a Mermaid by returning her to the Sea, and is gifted the Mermaid’s Comb for his act of kindness. Beyond this, he is also offered three wishes by the Mermaid, once again showing that the power of the Mermaid’s Comb is tied to her ability to grant wishes. The story also shows the man combing the water and how this can act as a way to call to the Mermaid. I will link two lovely retellings of this story below if you want to read the whole folktale.
So, yes, a Mermaid’s Comb goes far beyond simply being a way to keep her long locks beautiful. A Mermaid’s Comb is an important magickal tool that can truly aid us in developing a connection with the Mermaids. If you want to add a punch to your Mermaid Magick practices, I suggest enchanting a comb to use as part of your Glamour Magick work. This comb can draw Mermaid energy to you, be used to protect yourself, or be used to tap into Mermaid allure, depending on how you wish to use this tool! Then each time you run this comb through your hair, you will be weaving the enchantment right into your hair.

Interesting, never thought of that. What is discovered in simple items brings up depths never thought of. Combing as a act that is associated with looking oneself at the mirror, surely brings up ideas in me:
– The trance-like state that can be achiieved by the simple act of looking in the mirror;
– In that state the reflection is as if subsumed in the consciousness that we perceive in ourselves as beings endowed with mind, Mind which reflects Pure Consciousness as in a lake or mirror.
The combing then gets you there to that state of pure indifferentiation between being and Creator.

I’ll admit, I’ve always viewed the Mermaid’s Comb as purely a symbol of vanity and allure, but you’ve completely shifted my perspective—I love the idea of it being a sacred summoning tool and a bridge to communion rather than just a prop.
