Welcome back to White Rose of Avalon, my Darlings. For this week’s Siren Saturday, I have decided to share another entry in my Incarnated Mermaid Diaries series. Today’s topic is Mermaids as Bestowers of Sovereignty!
So, this topic was brought to mind for me when I was thinking of how Melusine is a Sovereignty Goddess who bestowed upon Raymond many blessings. Melusine gave Raymond the knowledge that would allow him to gain lands, and she gifted him with two interlocking rings set with powerful stones that would assure his victory in battles. Beyond this, when they married, she literally built the Castle of Lusignan and bore him ten sons. All of these things prove just how much of a Sovereignty figure Melusine is, but she is still always a Mermaid Goddess.
That got me to thinking: how do Mermaids function as bestowers of Sovereignty? The answer is that Mermaids often gift those who help them, either with material forms of wealth, with knowledge, or with wishes. In any of these cases, Mermaids can grant others greater Sovereignty. This makes so much sense to me, given that Mermaids are very much Water Faeries who hold freedom as of the utmost importance. They are as free as the Sea!
Now, you may wonder what that means for Incarnated Mermaids, like myself. I think that this desire for Sovereignty, autonomy, and freedom is a driving force for many of us. At least this is the case for me. I have always loathed the idea of being stuck doing something just because it was expected of me. Beyond that, I want to live a life of emotional integrity, a life where I am not sacrificing my ideals out of the fear of being judged. I think that Mermaid Souls tend to work to grant ourselves Sovereignty through learning to live from a place of truth and authenticity. We even see this in stories of Mermaids and other Water Faeries, with the Selkie tales being extremely intertwined with authenticity. We can use these stories to teach us how to live in authenticity, and when we have found a way to do so, we can inspire others to live in their own authenticity! That is the true power of Sovereignty, the true power of the Mermaids, the true power of truth. The idea of living in truth and with integrity is also connected deeply with stories of Water Faeries, as the Lady of the Lake is the one who gifts the Sword of Truth (Excalibur) to King Arthur, and the sword must be returned to her when he lay dying. Oh, yes, there is so much inspiration found by learning your folklore. Once you have gained Sovereignty, you can work to spread that way of thinking and way of living to others.
I hope you have enjoyed this short reflection on Mermaids and Sovereignty. What ways do you work to live in your Sovereignty? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!

Maranda, this reflection is absolutely gorgeous—thank you for sharing it! ✨ The way you wove Melusine’s gifts, the Selkies’ quest for authenticity, and the Lady of the Lake’s Sword of Truth together really hit home for me. It’s such a powerful reminder that Sovereignty isn’t about dominating others, but about returning to ourselves.
For me, living in Sovereignty looks like a daily practice of setting gentle but firm boundaries—especially with my time and energy. I’ve started treating my “no” as sacred, and my “yes” as a full-hearted gift rather than an obligation. I also carve out quiet moments by the water (even if it’s just a bath or a rainy window) to ask myself: “Am I speaking my truth right now, or am I performing for approval?” That check-in has been my own little Excalibur—cutting through the noise to find what’s real.
I love what you said about inspiring others through our own authenticity. It takes so much courage, but when we live that way, we give permission to everyone around us to do the same. That’s the ripple effect of true Sovereignty, isn’t it? 🌊
Thank you for this beautiful nudge to stay free, stay truthful, and stay as untamed as the sea. Sending you so much love and salty blessings! 🧜♀️💙
Thank you so much for your kind words. I am delighted to know that my reflections about Mermaids and Sovereignty hit home for you so deeply! I love what you said about having gentle but firm boundaries, as that really is the key to keeping true to the self. As always, thanks for reading and commenting! ✨ 🌊 💦 🩵
