Welcome back to White Rose of Avalon, my Darlings. For today’s Tarot Tuesday blog post, I will be sharing my review of the new Avalon Visions Oracle deck by Cheryl Yambrach Rose.
The deck is brand new, having just been released this past May, and it has the tagline ‘Sacred Wisdom Through the Three Realms’ on the box. I think that this is a lovely tagline and also a good description of how the deck is formatted. There are 44 cards that are broken down into three realms. These three realms are inspired by the Celtic concept of the Three Realms of Celtic Cosmology. However, in traditional Celtic Cosmology, the realms are the Realm of Sky, the Realm of Land, and the Realm of Sea. That is changed here, with the focus being on the Otherworld, the Terrestrial World, and the Stellar World.
I really appreciate this interpretation, as it is a bit different, but still fits in with Celtic belief. Certainly, it is great to see the realms broken down into the Terrestrial (or human mundane world), the Stellar (or Cosmic world), and the Otherworld, which seems to add depth to the understanding of Celtic Cosmology and broadens the scope of this breakdown. This also makes a good deal of sense to those who are familiar with the Otherworld, or rather Otherworlds of Celtic belief. It is also nice to see that thought was put into how the cards would be grouped, and there are even small symbols at the bottom of each card to denote what realm the card is connected with.
The artwork on the cards is absolutely stunning, and I love that so much weight is placed on the Arthurian legends, with Arthur, Merlin, Morgan le Fay, and Guinevere appearing throughout the deck. There are also some nods to the Christian Mysticism aspect of Avalon (and of Glastonbury), with cards featuring Mary Magdalene and Archangel Michael. Although I do not work with this aspect of Avalonian energy, as I am centered in the Goddess, the Fae, and Pagan aspects, I think this adds depth to the deck.
Overall, I would say that this deck is a lovely addition to the Avalonian Priestess’s or Witch’s collection. If you were considering purchasing the deck and were on the fence, I would definitely recommend it. I hope you have enjoyed reading my review of this lovely deck.
