Welcome back to Aphrodisia Week 2026 here on White Rose of Avalon, my Darlings. For this sixth post, I will be discussing Aphrodite’s epithet of Despoina, which means the Ruling Goddess, or the Mistress! This is the epithet of several Divinities, including Aphrodite, which shows how well-known this epithet was in the ancient world.
Aphrodite Despoina relates to her as a Ruling Goddess, a Mistress, and a Queen. Although there is actually more than one epithet of Aphrodite that means Queen, I chose to discuss Despoina, given the widespread usage of this epithet for multiple Goddesses. This is Aphrodite in her role as the Queen of Heaven, the Goddess who Rules the Heart, and the Queen of Cyprus, to name a few. She is powerful, potent, and regal. This is the energy of Aphrodite that holds both connection with the planet Venus, as well as the Queenly energy of the Solar Divine Feminine!
Aphrodite as Queen is an energy that I have always been keenly drawn to. For she is not the Queen in the purely rulership sense, but also with the energy of the Creatrix thrown in. Aphrodite Despoina serves as a potent reminder for us to embrace our Inner Queen energy, to rule over our own lives, and to prioritize Sovereignty! Lessons from Despoina include being more comfortable in your own skin, setting boundaries, and living from a place of Authenticity. I find this epithet of Aphrodite to be one that calls to me when I am working on building a connection with my Inner Queen. I also am drawn to this epithet when I feel the desire to stand firmly in my own power, and to set boundaries, especially magickally so!
Oh, yes, there is so much power in embracing the Inner Queen (or Inner King) within each of us. To embrace the Sovereignty within is to truly come into your own. It is from this place that you can learn to rule your own life by your own rules!
