Aphrodite Antheia: Friend of Flowers

Welcome back to Aphrodisia Week 2026 here on White Rose of Avalon, my Darlings.   For this third post, I will be discussing Aphrodite’s epithet of Antheia, which means Friend of Flowers!

Antheia is an epithet of Aphrodite that was used at Cnossos.   I really love this particular epithet because it truly brings in the lovely Rose energy of this Love Goddess.   After all, Aphrodite is incredibly associated with Roses, as is Venus, with the planet Venus even forming a five-petaled Rose in the sky with the pattern of her orbit!   The Rose is often considered the Flower of Love, an ideal flower to be Sacred to Love Goddesses.

When we call Aphrodite a Friend of Flowers, we are showing her connection to the gentle beauty of the world around us, making her, as a Goddess of Beauty, far from superficial.   Her status as a Goddess of Beauty is truly all-encompassing, as is her Love Goddess status.   Aphrodite rules over all types of love and all types of beauty, not just romantic love or superficial beauty!   The beauty that this Goddess rules over does not ask us to be vain, but rather to see the beauty in the world around us, and Aphrodite Antheia is a wonderful epithet to honor when desiring to remember to be grateful for the beauty around you.

At least, that is what Aphrodite Antheia means to me, a reminder that the beauty of flowers is truly something sacred.    Flowers are symbols of the Divine Feminine, and they are sweet-scented and gentle; however, even the Rose has thorns to protect herself.   So, that is another thing that comes to mind when I think of Aphrodite as a Friend to Flowers: a reminder that even the most gentle of people can and should protect themselves.   Aphrodite Antheia can be a wonderful aid to seeing the strength in that which is soft, and working with the balance between softness and force, between effort and ease!   It is easy to dismiss flowers as just something aesthetically appealing, forgetting that they can be powerful medicines and hold many secrets, if you are just patient enough to listen.   This is very much in line with how often Aphrodite herself is dismissed as just a Goddess of Love and Beauty, with people misunderstanding her as frivolous.   However, when we take the time to learn about Aphrodite, we see just how much more she is!

I hope you have enjoyed this short reflection on Aphrodite’s epithet of Antheia.   What does this epithet mean to you?   Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!
