Welcome back to Aphrodisia Week 2026 here on White Rose of Avalon, my Darlings. For this second post, I will be discussing Aphrodite’s epithet of Philomeides, which means Laughter-Loving!
Philomeides is considered one of the common Homeric epithets of Aphrodite. This epithet means Laughter-Loving, showing the light-hearted and joyful aspect of the Great Goddess Aphrodite!
In my experiences, Aphrodite can be a truly joyful presence in life. She has often appeared to me as Laughter-Loving in times when I am feeling emotionally strained, there to provide love and comfort, and to inspire me to do something silly just because it brings me joy! Aphrodite Philomeides is the ideal epithet to remind us that life need not always be so serious. We are meant to take pleasure in play and to find joy in life. After all, without laughter and joy, life is really not worth living.
When I feel the pull to work with Aphrodite Philomeides, I often find myself throwing an impromptu dance party in honor of Aphrodite. I am dancing for the Goddess and with her, and I am providing myself with some much-needed time to play and feel good in my physical body! Aphrodite Philomeides is an epithet there to remind us of the power of lightening our loads. She is the soft embrace of warmth and joy, like the sunshine on your face after a long Winter.
In my experience, Aphrodite Philomeides is the Goddess as Venus Morning Star, Venus holding communion with and conjunct the Sun. She is warm, and she is healing; she is the bliss of Summers spent in the Sun and at the beach. Oh, yes, because she is pleasure and play, she is aligned with the more youthful Maiden energy of Aphrodite. While she is ever the Lover and Creatrix, as Philomeides, her joyful Maiden energy is also alive, and she inspires the Princess fantasy of the Summer of endless fun and endless love! Aphrodite Philomeides often just wants us to smile and truly mean it, not to fake a smile when we want to hide our feelings, but to smile because we feel overcome by love and joy. Some of my favorite ways to honor Aphrodite Philomeides are to dance, swim (splashing is a must), laugh with my whole body, and find beauty in the world around me by focusing on small pleasures.
I hope you have enjoyed reading my reflections on this epithet. Do you have a connection with Aphrodite Philomeides? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!
