Welcome to Aphrodisia Week 2026 here on White Rose of Avalon, my Darlings. For this first post, I will be discussing Aphrodite’s epithet of Anaduomenê, Risen from the Sea! Of course, since I have begun this theme week on a Mermaid Monday, I had to discuss an epithet of Aphrodite relating to the Sea. Before I begin this journey into Aphrodite and her epithets, I want to preface this post and the rest of the week. As I primarily want this week to be a personal exploration of my relationship with each of these epithets that I have chosen to discuss, I will only give a brief description before going into my relationship to the aspect.
Anaduomene is quite literally considered to be the epithet that describes her arrival during her most famous birth story. This is the fully formed Goddess of Love as she has risen from the Sea, given the name Aphrodite, which means ‘Foam Born’. This is Aphrodite in one of her most watery aspects!
Moving on to why this epithet is so important to me, I love Aphrodite Anaduomene because this is the first image that most people have when discussing Aphrodite. This is the image that has inspired much of the most lovely artworks of Aphrodite and Venus for centuries. This epithet truly embodies all of the magick we most often associate with the Goddess of Love. One of the most potent ways I have built a relationship with Aphrodite over the years is as a Goddess of the Sea, as a Goddess associated with Mermaids. So, this epithet that describes her birth from the Sea is so special to me.
I also have to think that my own nature as an Incarnated Mermaid likely has a large bit to say about my deep pull towards the watery epithets of Aphrodite. Aphrodite Anaduomene is an epithet that makes me envision both the Goddess of Love and Pleasure and the Goddess of the Sea, all rolled into one. She is Aphrodite as she was first seen walking out of the waves. She is Aphrodite as a fully formed Goddess, born to sway hearts, govern love, encourage the embracing of Sacred Sexuality, and the enjoyment of the delights of being alive! That is beautiful, that is potent, and that is part of this Goddess that can never be taken from her mythology. Sure, in the modern day, many of her epithets are forgotten, or glossed over. For instance, most people tend to forget that Aphrodite is a Goddess of War, or even that she governs over all types of love, not just romantic or sexual. However, in the attempt to oversimplify a Great Goddess, they can never forget her birth story of being Risen from the Sea, as that is the story that has inspired so much art. That is the story that is often a first introduction to this Goddess!
I hope you have enjoyed reading my short reflections about my connection to this epithet. Do you work with this epithet of Aphrodite Anaduomene? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!

What a beautiful and deeply personal reflection, Maranda! I absolutely love how you’ve woven together the iconic imagery of Anaduomene with your own path as an Incarnated Mermaid—that connection feels so authentic and visceral. You’re so right that this epithet is the one that sticks in the cultural imagination, and there’s something so powerful about that: no matter how much people simplify or flatten Her, they can’t erase Her rise from the foam. It’s the ultimate reminder that She is wild, untamed, and born of the deep.
I don’t work with this epithet as frequently as I’d like, but reading your post makes me want to sit by the shore and really meditate on that moment of emergence—not just as a birth story, but as a daily reminder to rise into our own fullness, pleasure, and authenticity, just as She did. Thank you for sharing your heart and kicking off Mermaid Monday with such potent magick! 🧜♀️🌊💖
I am so glad that this post resonated with you! I love your idea of meditating on this epithet at the shoreline. That sounds magickal! As always, thanks for reading and commenting. ✨ 🌊 🐚
