Welcome back to White Rose of Avalon, my Darlings. For today’s blog post, I am sharing a poem about the end of the month of May!
Goodbye May, the End of the Lusty Month
by Maranda Wabik
The final day of May is here
Oh, how sad to see you go this year
However, I have nothing to fear
Since, as Fitzgerald said
“And then, one fairy night, May became June.”
Oh, how lovely that in my favorite of his works
He has mentioned the Fae
Oh, yes, his characters may have been
The Beautiful and Damned
But, he was showing the truth of emotion
Yes, lavish parties
Yes, chaos
But, also a love between people
How ideal for a novel about love to mention May
May is the Lusty Month
How ideal for a novel about love to mention June
June is the month associated with marriage
June is even named for Juno,
She who is the Roman Goddess of Marriage
So, yes, I will miss my beloved month of May
But, how wonderful that June is here the next day
I feel a sense of bliss
That is surely hard to miss
As I think of all the Summery fun
That is on the way
As we near the Midsummer day!

What a lovely and reflective poem, Maranda! I especially love how you weave in Fitzgerald’s line about May becoming June—it feels like a magical threshold. The nod to the Fae, the contrast between May as “the Lusty Month” and June as the month of marriage (with Juno watching over it), is such a beautiful way to honor the shift between seasons. And the closing image of nearing Midsummer day leaves me with a sense of warmth and anticipation. Thank you for sharing this bittersweet goodbye to May—it truly captures the lush, emotional energy of this time of year. 💛
I am so glad that my poem resonated with you! It really is a magickal time of year. As always, thanks for reading and commenting! ✨
