The Nine of Cups and Finding Your Bliss

Welcome back to White Rose of Avalon, my Darlings.   For today’s Tarot Tuesday post, I have decided to discuss the Nine of Cups card!   I have always loved the energy of this card, so let’s get into what the Nine of Cups means to me.

I once read a description of the Nine of Cups card as “Summer’s Cauldron of all good things for the heart and soul.”    I think that this quote, which has stuck with me for years now, really gets at the heart of what I think of when I encounter the Nine of Cups.   You see, I consider the Nines of Tarot to be the exemplars of what their suits represent.   This is built on the fact that Nine is considered a perfect number, and on my own work as an Avalonian Enchantress, Witch, and Priestess.

The number Nine is incredibly important on the Path of Avalon, but also throughout folklore and myth, as this number has long held deep significance.   That is why we see so many groups of Nine taking on huge importance: the Nine Morgens of Avalon, the Nine Maidens of Annwn, the Nine Daughters of Ran from Norse myth, and the Nine Muses of Greek myth, to name just a few.   You see, part of why Nine is so impactful is that it is the triple three, literally containing three triplicities within one structure, making it a representation of three times itself!

So, that brings us back to what the Nine of Cups means as the exemplar of the Cups suit.   The Cups suit is the Water suit, the suit of intuition, and the suit of emotions in Tarot.   So, the Nine of Cups holds all of these things in perfect harmony.   The Nine of Cups appears to tell us we are on the right path, so long as we are following the urgings of our hearts and heeding our intuition.   That is why there is so much deep-seated joy to be found when this card appears in a Reading.   It may be such a small and subtle thing to have the reassurance that you know in your heart what is right for you, but it is still very powerful!

While many versions of this card show a figure lounging in bliss, or in some other state of relaxation, my favorite version has a different image.   My favorite Nine of Cups card is the 9 de Coupes card from Le Tarot arthurien by Claire Duval, which is the version pictured at the top of the post.    This version of the card depicts Lancelot holding a Comb.   The Comb has fair hair entangled on it, Guinevere’s hair.   The image shown is Lancelot when he is searching for Guinevere after she has been kidnapped.   So, this card does perfectly depict the energy of following your heart to find your bliss that I have been talking about as intrinsic to the Nine of Cups energy.   In this case, Lancelot is following his heart to rescue Guinevere and find bliss in his love for her!

I hope you have enjoyed this reflection on my own relationship with the Nine of Cups card.   What does the Nine of Cups mean to you?   Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!

  1. What a beautiful and thoughtful reflection, Maranda! I love how you weave together the mystical significance of the number nine with the deep emotional current of the Cups suit. The “Summer’s Cauldron” quote is such a perfect way to capture that feeling of abundance and heart-led joy. And your choice of the Arthurian Tarot’s Nine of Cups—with Lancelot following his heart even in the midst of searching—adds such a poignant, active layer to the card’s meaning. It’s not just passive bliss, but devotion in motion. Thank you for sharing your Avalonian perspective; it really deepens how I’ll see this card from now on. 💧✨
