The Incarnated Mermaid Diaries: Light and Dark Waters, Living in the Liminal

Welcome back to White Rose of Avalon, my Darlings.   For this week’s Siren Saturday, I have decided to share the fourteenth entry in my Incarnated Mermaid Diaries series.   Today’s topic is Light and Dark Waters, Living in the Liminal!

Many people think of Water as an element of healing and purification.   While that is true, that is only part of the truth of what Water is.   Water is healing, but Water is also the dark and dangerous aspect of storms, drownings, and murky swamps.   The fact that many people ignore the darker aspects of Water really got me thinking.   To truly embrace the multiple aspects of Water is to live in the Liminal!

The Liminality of Water ripples out to also include the fact that Water is a portal.    It is very common to cross Waters to get to the Otherworld and the Underworld.   This is why we have so many stories of people being ferried over the Sea, on a River, or on a Lake to cross into the afterlife.   The Liminality of Water is also reflected in just how many types of Mermaids and other Water Faeries exist!   After all, you do not get much more Liminal than the Fae.

So, I think it is pretty clear that to be a Water Witch, a Water Enchantress, or a Water Priestess is to truly exist in the Liminal.   I think it can also easily be said that Incarnated Mermaids fully exist in the Liminal, no matter what, given that we are Mermaid Souls currently ensouled in human forms.   This means that we are both of the Earth in this lifetime, but also of the Otherworld in our Souls!   I love that I can truly embrace the Liminal through my Magickal and Spiritual practices, through communion with the Mermaids, and through my own Shadow Work as an Incarnated Mermaid.   I love to be able to delve into the pain and trauma that I have not yet processed, and cry out the anxiety while I am in the Bath, allowing everything to wash down the drain.   Beyond that, I can meditate and journal with my Mermaids and Water Fae friends to allow me to feel comforted when I am vulnerable.   It is after releasing what has been pent up that you can focus on the healing power of Water!

Oh, yes, it is a true blessing to be able to see the value in all aspects of Water.   I hope that you have enjoyed this short meditation on the flowing and varied energies held within Water.   What is your favorite way to work with the various aspects of Water?   Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!

  1. This is a beautifully reflective post, Maranda. I love how you balance the nurturing and fierce aspects of water—acknowledging that healing and danger can coexist in the same element. Your point about liminality really resonates: water as a threshold between worlds, between life and afterlife, and even between human and fae selves for incarnated mermaids. The image of crying out anxiety in the bath and letting it wash down the drain is so visceral and real. For me, my favorite way to work with water’s dual nature is through ocean swimming at dawn—calm and renewal on the surface, but with an awareness of the cold, unseen depths below. Thank you for sharing this entry. 🧜‍♀️🌊

    • I am so glad that my post resonated with you! I think it’s very important to look at the elements through a nuanced lens, as that is how we can understand them best. I love that you swim at dawn, it certainly sounds both cleansing and bracing to wake you up and honor your connection to water! As always, thanks for reading and commenting.
