Reading the Minor Arcana Suits as Stories

Welcome back to White Rose of Avalon, my Darlings.   For today’s Tarot Tuesday blog post, I am sharing a way of working with the Minor Arcana Suits.   This way is to examine each suit as a story, much like we can view the Major Arcana as the Fool’s Journey!   Now, without further ado, let’s look at the Minor Arcana suit by suit.

SWORDS

~I think of the Swords suit as telling the story of a battle.   The Ace of Swords is calling us to take up the Sword of Truth and be ready for a new battle.   The Two of Swords requires us to work with others in a temporary truce to accomplish tasks.   The Three of Swords reveals hidden truths, ones that often hurt, hence the feeling of betrayal often tied to the card.   The Four of Swords grants a short and deserved rest.   The Five of Swords is the ultimate card of conflict, teaching us the need to scope out and look at things from other angles.   The Six of Swords denotes a time of transition.   The Seven of Swords reminds us that we need not always be the outsider doing everything alone.   The Eight of Swords brings a sense of loss and abandonment.   The Nine of Swords heralds the anxiety and nightmares that often plague us after trauma.   The Ten of Swords calls for the end of battle, weary and bloody, the fight has finally ceased.   All together they show the transformation we go through as we forge ahead and fight battles in our own lives!

WANDS

~I think of the Wands suit as telling the story of the creative journey.   The Ace of Wands is the first spark of inspiration.   The Two of Wands is the planning stage of the project.    The Three of Wands is the gathering of materials, hence the sending out of scouts to draw resources closer to home.   The Four of Wands is the celebration of all the small accomplishments that have been achieved.   The Five of Wands is the conflict over how to go about the creative project.   The Six of Wands is the victory parade, having decided what form the project will take.   The Seven of Wands is a reminder to delegate tasks; you can be the leader and still ask for help.   The Eight of Wands is the card of action and then awaiting results, no instant gratification for your endeavor.   The Nine of Wands is the final burst of energy needed to complete the project, even if you are tired and weary, but you are nearly done.   The Ten of Wands is the taking on of burdens, even if not your own, and this is the time to show your work.   All together they show the gradual evolution of a new creative project and how we can go about putting inspiration to use!

PENTACLES

~I think of the Pentacles suit as telling the story of the building of a home or business.   The Ace of Pentacles is the foundation of the home or business being laid.   The Two of Pentacles is the card of work-life balance, reminding us that as we build something, we need to do so in a balanced way.   The Three of Pentacles is the card of apprenticeship, showing us that as we grow, we still need to hone our skills.   The Four of Pentacles is all about protection, protecting what has been built so far.   The Five of Pentacles is the card of doubt, fear of lack, and the questioning of whether or not our desires will turn out.    The Six of Pentacles is the card of community, of sharing of resources, leading to the building of bonds.   The Seven of Pentacles is the slow tending of things so that you may grow to abundance.   The Eight of Pentacles is the card of commissions, employment, and getting paid for hard work.   The Nine of Pentacles is the card of recognition for individual efforts, recognition of what you have accomplished.   The Ten of Pentacles is the card of a solid foundation that can sustainably produce abundance, a happy home.   All together they show us the path to achieve our goals through hard work and consistent efforts!

CUPS

~I think of the Cups suit as telling the story of building a family.   The Ace of Cups is the overflowing energy of love and new possibilities in the emotional sphere.   The Two of Cups is the card of true love and happy marriages.   The Three of Cups is the card of celebrations and fond time spent with friends and loved ones.   The Four of Cups is the card of discontent, and is there to show us a time to question and grow bored, a time to ask, ” Is this what you want?”   The Five of Cups is the card of Shadow Work and alchemizing old emotions.   The Six of Cups is the card of nostalgia and fond remembrance, one to look back at your childhood and see how you may build your own family and what you may choose to change.   The Seven of Cups is a card of opportunity and illusions, a time to ask do you take a new opportunity or do you stay the course you are currently on?   The Eight of Cups is the turning away of that which does not serve, choosing your true path.   The Nine of Cups is the cauldron of all good things for the heart and soul, a feeling of being on your best path.   The Ten of Cups is the card of a blissful home and family life, the cup overflowing with joy.   All together they tell of the trials and tribulations of building your family, by blood or by finding them, but also tell of the rewards of doing so!

  1. This is a wonderful way to approach the Minor Arcana—it makes each suit feel so much more intuitive and memorable, just like the Fool’s Journey does for the Majors.

I especially love how you’ve framed Cups as building a family (not just romantic love) and Pentacles as the story of a home or business foundation. The distinction between the battle of Swords, the creative journey of Wands, the building of Pentacles, and the family/emotional journey of Cups gives each suit a unique emotional arc.

Maranda, this is such a gift for anyone learning tarot or looking to deepen their practice. The way you connected the Five of Cups to Shadow Work and the Eight of Wands to “action without instant gratification” really stood out. Thank you for sharing this! 💫🌷🤝

    • I am so glad that it resonated with you! This is a concept I have been thinking a lot about for a very long time, and I have discussed it with friends, but had not had the chance to write it out to share until now. I truly do hope that this helps others to deepen their understanding of the Minor Arcana suits! As always, thanks for reading and commenting.
