Welcome back to White Rose of Avalon, my Darlings. Today’s blog post is about how Venus and Mercury can create an interesting balance when working with planetary energy. To make things easy, I will be focusing on my own Vedic chart to examine this concept.
You see, my Ascendant is in Ashlesha Nakshatra, which is ruled by Mercury. My Sun and Moon are both in Purva Phalguni Nakshatra, which is ruled by Venus. Furthermore, both of these Nakshatras have the elemental association with Water, making for an interesting link between the two Nakshatras. I have written before about how Watery Venus is in general, but I also think that Mercury can have a very Watery energy. After all, the metal Mercury is a liquid at room temperature, which is why it is called Quicksilver. This Quicksilver nickname really does remind me of Mercury from Roman myth, as he is a messenger of the Gods and often depicted with his flying sandals! Beyond this, I think of Sailor Mercury from Sailor Moon, as her powers were deeply tied to Water and featured bubbles. I have to imagine that this was a callback to Mercury having Watery connotations.
So, why is Ashlesha, ruled by Mercury, considered so deeply Watery? The answer to this question is two-fold. Firstly, Ashlesha falls into the Zodiac sign of Sidereal Cancer, the Cardinal Water sign. Secondly, Ashlesha is represented by the Coiled Serpent and is connected to the the Nagas, Serpentine deities associated with Water. Serpents are deeply linked to Watery energy, although they do also hold connections with Fire, which certainly adds to the links between Mercury and Venus in this way.
So, why is Purva Phalguni, ruled by Venus, considered so Watery? Well, this is more based on the connection between Venus and many pleasure principles to Water. Purva Phalguni falls into the Zodiac sign of Sidereal Leo, which is a Fire sign. This, interestingly, shows another connection between Ashlesha and Purva Phalguni, because as I noted, Serpents can be seen as both Watery and Fiery. Beyond that, Water and Fire form a balance between themselves. We also can see that Watery Goddesses are also Solar Goddesses in Celtic myth. Two prime examples of this are Sulis and Aine!
Now that I have covered the Vedic Astrology part, let’s look at the energies of Mercury and Venus. Mercury is the energy of quick-wittedness and intellect. Venus is the energy of love, beauty, and pleasure. When they come together, we see the sparks of romance, built on being compatible both on a physical and on an intellectual level. When they come together, we also see deep inspiration, the Muse calling to us to take a new creative direction that also involves utilizing our Voice! You see Mercury also rules over communication, so Mercury and Venus together can be potent allies for the Poet and the Priestess, as I have well-experienced in my life.
I hope you have enjoyed this reflection on my experiences with balancing the energy of Mercury and Venus. What are your relationships with Mercury and Venus? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!
