A Mermaid’s Library: Book Recommendations

Welcome back to White Rose of Avalon, my Darlings.   For today’s Mermaid Monday blog post, I will be sharing a list of very Mermaidy Book Recommendations!   For the record, I will not be ranking these books, as they are all different flavors of Mermaidy and Watery knowledge to delve into.    Without further ado, let’s look at some of my favorite books for a Mermaid’s library!

The Little Mermaid by Hans Christian Andersen
~Of course, I had to begin with the fairytale that began many a girl’s obsession with Mermaids, as it did go on to inspire the Disney film.   Yes, while the film is absolutely lovely, it is a more sanitized version of this tale.   I always highly recommend checking out this original fairytale full of emotion and tragedy!

Undine by Friedrich de la Motte Fouqué

~This novella is a story of a Knight who falls in love with a Water Spirit.   It went on to inspire the Opera of the same name, and it a seminal work of Mermaid fiction, along with Andersen’s tale, which is why it belongs on this list!

Mermaid Magic: Connecting with the Energy of the Ocean and the Healing Power of Water by Lucy Cavendish & Serene Conneeley

~This is a lovely compendium of Mermaid lore and magickal insights.   It is a great addition to any Faery and Mermaid Witch’s bookshelf, as it is a source of great love and information related to Mermaids!

Sea Magic: Connecting with the Ocean’s Energy by Sandra Kynes

~This is another ideal addition to any Faery, Mermaid, or Sea Witch’s collection.   There is a lot of great basic information on working with Sea Magick, which can inspire further study!

The Penguin Book of Mermaids edited by Cristina Bacchilega and Marie Alohalani Brown

~If you want Mermaid folklore, this is a great collection.   It goes over Mermaid folklore from around the world and covers some of the other stories I have listed in this list of recommendations, but in a more condensed way.   This smattering of information from around the world is certainly great to inspire further study!

Melusine; Or the Noble House of Lusignan by Jean d’Arras

~You know I could not make a list of Mermaid Library books without including the original written version of Melusine’s legend!   This is a seminal work of medieval literature, and one that I hold very close to my heart as a Priestess of Melusine.

The Romance of the Faery Melusine by Andre Lebey, translated by Gareth Knight

~This novel is an endlessly re-readable retelling of Melusine’s legend that is truly beautiful.   I love the truly romantic and sentimental tones of the novel, and I highly recommend it to anyone who loves Melusine’s legend!

How to Become a Mermaid: Embodying the Elemental Energy of Water by Elyrria Swann

~This is a wonderful book written by another Incarnated Mermaid, which I was just so happy to find it.   It is truly a lovely read and gives a lot of insights into working with Water and what it is like to live as a Mermaid Soul in a human body!

Encounters with Mermaids: Lessons from the Realm of the Water Elementals by William R. Mistele

~This is a wonderful book full of love for Mermaids and Water Spirits.   There are so many accounts of the author’s experiences with their energy, as well as a lot of love put into discussing the process of learning from the Sacred Waters!

Water Witchcraft: Magic and Lore from the Celtic Tradition by Annwyn Avalon

~This is a must have for any Celtic Water Magick practitioners.   It really gives a great basis for and lots of inspiration on how to build a relationship with Water!

The Way of the Water Priestess by Annwyn Avalon

~Of course, everything I said about the above title also applies to this one.   However, this is an even deeper dive into truly becoming a Water Priestess, to building a Devotional Relationship with the Sacred Waters, in your own unique way!

Wisht Waters by Gemma Gary

~I consider this one an ideal read for anyone wanting to learn more about Sacred Waters, as there is so much information to be found on Holy Wells and Springs in the UK.   There is also a great amount of folklore surrounding Sacred Waters, including the Gods, Goddesses, Spirits, Mermaids, and Fae associated with them!

Welsh Fairies by Mhara Starling

~Mhara Starling devotes a good bit of this book to discussing Watery Fae and Mermaid stories from Wales.   That means that this book definitely belongs on this list!

~Of course, this is just a short list of top books to add to a Mermaid Library to get you started.   I hope you have enjoyed reading this list of Mermaidy books.   What is your favorite book that belongs in a Mermaid Library?   Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!

  1. This is a wonderfully curated list, Maranda! I love how you’ve balanced classic literary tales (Undine, Melusine), original folklore (The Penguin Book of Mermaids), and practical/spiritual guides like Mermaid Magic and How to Become a Mermaid. The inclusion of Wisht Waters and Welsh Fairies is a great touch—holy wells and regional water fae are often overlooked.

For anyone just starting their “Mermaid Library,” The Little Mermaid (Andersen) and Sea Magic (Kynes) make an excellent pairing: one for the heartache and poetry of the myth, the other for hands-on connection with the ocean’s energy.

My own favorite to add would be The Deep by Rivers Solomon—it’s a powerful, speculative take on mermaids (descendants of pregnant enslaved women thrown overboard) that redefines mer-folklore through trauma, memory, and community. Very different from the romantic tradition, but deeply watery and unforgettable.

What’s one book you’re hoping to add to your own Mermaid Library next? 🧜‍♀️📚

    • I am so glad that you enjoyed my list. I have not read the book you mentioned, so thank you for the recommendation! As for what I want to add to my library next, I would love a copy of Melusine by Jean d’Arras in the original French. As always, thanks for reading and commenting! 🧜🏻‍♀️ 📚
