Welcome back to White Rose of Avalon, my Darlings. For today’s blog post, I will be exploring the process of developing a relationship with local bodies of water through my own relationship with my local River!
It may be easy to assume that when you are not living right next to the Sea, you do not have a place to be truly connected to bodies of water. However, I have found that to be categorically untrue. I live in Pennsylvania, a landlocked state, but I have always lived very close to the Susquehanna River, the longest River on the East Coast of the United States, at 444 miles long. So, I certainly had a body of water to connect with even as a small child.
I have always loved walking over bridges with the River below, and stopping to watch her waters. When I lived with my parents, I would spend hours next to her, as there is a part of their town that borders directly on the River. I would meditate with her energy, I would sit and read on the bench overlooking her, and I would draw as I felt the breeze ruffle my hair. Over time, I grew more and more enchanted with her energy. I had always been drawn to her, but as I lived within walking distance of a bluff overlooking her, I found the pull ever greater!
When I was a child, we lived in a different home, in a different town, still on the River. It was when we moved to the home my parents still live in today, and I was in my late teens, that this relationship grew deeper. The town is sleepy and quiet, and there is not much to do there, so I found my time occupied by listening to the Call of the River, for she sought to draw me close. During times of stress and strife, I found myself seeking to be near her. During times of joy and comfort, I would also go to be near her, wanting to share my happiness with her!
Even now, when I live with my husband, I am still not far from her beautiful presence, and when I go to visit my parents at their home, I usually cannot resist taking the time to take a walk next to her. In my area, she is not swimmable, and you cannot eat any fish from her waters, for she is sadly polluted where I live. I think the fact that she is polluted where I live is even more of a reason that I am so called to her. I often send out my energy in hopes of healing her even a little bit!
Now that I have shared a good bit about my relationship with the River, let’s look at some ways to build relationships with your own bodies of water. Firstly, I suggest looking up bodies of water in your area and seeking to visit the ones that call to you. When you visit your local waters, I have found that one of the most profound ways to build a relationship is to meditate next to the water. Allow the energy of the place to wash over you and listen to see if you can hear any insights the waters wish to tell.
Secondly, I suggest sending out your energy. This can be a song or dance, two of my favorite ways to send energy to the waters. This energy will not only aid in a connection, but it will also act as an offering to help heal the pain or destruction that a body of water may have faced. Finally, I want to suggest doing a ritual at the water’s edge. This need not be complex; in fact, sometimes simpler is best. But a small ritual to show love for the waters is the ideal way to cement a bond! I do want to note that if you would like to leave physical offerings to local bodies of water, make sure they are biodegradable and will not harm the waters (if you are placing them in the water) or the earth or wildlife (if you are leaving them at the water’s edge).
I hope that you have enjoyed reading this rumination on developing a relationship with local bodies of water. What local body of water do you have a bond with? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!
