The Three of Cups in Tarot: Joy, Friendship, and Springtime Energy

Welcome back to White Rose of Avalon, my Darlings.   For today’s Tarot Tuesday blog post, I will be exploring the Three of Cups card as a card of friendships, joy, and Springtime energy!

The Three of Cups card is most often depicted with three women toasting with cups.   Often, the women on the card are wearing flower crowns, and there is a sense of joy to the imagery.   This is very much in line with the Three of Cups meaning, as it is a card that denotes fond times spent with loved ones and impromptu celebrations!   This is not a card of a rigid and overly planned celebration, but rather the times when you are joyfully having drinks with friends or even a girl’s night in.   Honestly, the energy of the card almost reminds me of teenage slumber parties or enjoying the simple pleasures of being around close friends.

I have always adored the Three of Cups card, with its playful and whimsical energy.   The card just brings a smile to my face when I see it, and I feel a sense of joy.   That is possibly the true magick of the Three of Cups energy; it is an energy of playful communion with friends and loved ones, it is an energy of joy and whimsy, and it is an energy that is there to remind us that things need not always be so serious.   The Three of Cups serves as a reminder that we need to celebrate even small victories, and that sharing our joy with loved ones is a blessing.   I tend to especially think of the Three of Cups to hold a deep resonance to relationships between women.   The imagery always features three women enjoying time together.   That, combined with the very feminine and watery energy of the suit, makes me think of this as a card that harkens to the bonds of feminine friendships and sisterhoods.   In this way, the Three of Cups is a reminder of the importance of women joining together and supporting each other, instead of remaining mired in the idea that women must always be so overly competitive with one another.   This overly competitive energy, instead of truly loving and supporting one another with joy, is born out of the fact that Western culture seems to want everyone to act out of the selfish pursuit of goals.   However, the Three of Cups energy of joyful celebration and community is a potent reminder that we need not lean into being overly competitive, and that life is better when we learn to support our loved ones, our sisters, and truly feel excitement and joy for their accomplishments!

I think this joyful and whimsical energy is why the Three of Cups is a card that I think of as holding so much Springtime energy.   The very imagery of the card, often featuring women with flower crowns, speaks to this Springtime energy, holding resonance with both the Vernal Equinox and Beltane in my mind!   The Three of Cups combines both the youthful and optimistic Maiden energy with a bit of the Sensual Creatrix energy, showing the importance of play while also nodding to the overflowing abundance of the fertility of the Sacred Waters.

So, yes, the Three of Cups card is one of communion with friends, one of play, one of optimism, one of joy, and one of whimsical possibilities.   I hope you have enjoyed this short post reflecting on my relationship with the Three of Cups in the Tarot.    What is your relationship with the Three of Cups?   Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!
