The Watery Nature of Venus

Welcome back to White Rose of Avalon, my Darlings.   For today’s Mermaid Monday blog post, I will be discussing the Watery Nature of Venus!   I will be looking at both astrology and mythology in this exploration of Venus connected with water.   So, without further ado, let’s explore how Venus is related to water.

The planet Venus is the planet of Love, Beauty, and Sensuality.   Of course, today, Venus is a very hot planet, with no water in sight, but that does not change her mythic origins.   In myth, Venus is remembered greatly for the myth of the Birth of Venus.   In her most common birth story, she was born directly from the Sea, with the name Aphrodite, her Greek counterpart, literally meaning ‘foam born’.   This is obviously a reference to Sea Foam!   We can see this in countless artworks, the beautiful and feminine Goddess of Love rising from the Sea.    The image of Venus rising from the Sea is one that shows her boundless nature of fertility, sexuality, sensuality, and love.   Even the Sacred objects and animal associations for Venus show her deep ties to the waters.   Swans and Dolphins are included in lists of animals Sacred to Venus.   Cowrie Shells, symbols of fertility and Sacred Sexuality, are also considered Sacred to Venus!   Needless to say, Venus is definitely very linked to water in Greco-Roman mythology.

Furthermore, in Vedic Astrology, two out of the three Venus-ruled Nakshatras have watery associations.    Purva Phalguni is a water element Nakshatra, and Purva Ashada is an air element Nakshatra, but the deity associated with Purva Ashada is Apah, which is Deified Water!   This leaves Bharani as the only Venus-ruled Nakshatra without associations tied to water in some way.

So, clearly, the energy of Venus, the planet, and the Venusian Goddesses has a deep tie to water.   This is also true of Celtic Venusian Faery Queens, such as my beloved Melusine!   Melusine is a Mermaid Goddess of Avalon, whose seven aspects I teach about in my 7-month-long online class, The Melusine Mysteries, which is currently open for enrollment.    As far as her nature as a Celtic Venus, she is deeply tied to fertility and sexuality.   She bore ten sons to her husband Raymond, and blessed him with great wealth and Sovereignty!   Beyond this, her title of ‘the Builder Faery’ shows her fertility, as well.   She is famed for having built the town of Lusignan in France, according to medieval legend!   Of course, Melusine is not the only Celtic Venusian Faery Queen with a connection to water.   Another example of the Celtic Venus being connected with water is Blodeuwedd’s connection to Llyn Morwynion, or the Lake of the Maidens.   Llyn Morwynion comes into the tale when Blodeuwedd and her maidens were chased by an angry Gwydion after Blodeuwedd and her lover, Gronw Pebyr, attempted to kill Lleu Llaw Gyffes.    In fact, the lake was given the moniker, Lake of the Maidens, because in the story, all of her maidens drowned in the lake.   After this, Blodeuwedd turned from her Flower Bride form into her Owl form, fully embracing her own Sovereignty!

Finally, I want to mention the connection between the elemental associations of water and the associations of the planet Venus.   Venus is known best as the planet of Love and Sensuality.   Both love and sensuality are deeply tied to the water element.   After all, water is the element of the emotions, of nurturing, of sensuality, of sexuality, and of fertility!

I hope that you have enjoyed this look at the watery energy of Venus.   What other connections can you think of between the nature of Venus and the element of water?    Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!

  1. This is such a fascinating connection! I never thought about Venus being so deeply tied to water, but it makes perfect sense, especially with the emotions and sensuality aspect. Beautiful post, Maranda!🌷🤝
