The Ice Mermaid’s Song: A Poem

Welcome back to White Rose of Avalon, my Darlings.   For today’s final Mermaid Monday blog post of 2025, I am sharing a poem about a Wintery Mermaid and her wisdom.

The Ice Mermaid’s Song

by Maranda Wabik

Soft humming emanates from the Icy Waters

The Siren’s Song slowly growing in volume

Wonder begins to overcome my senses

Oh, who is Singing the Song of the Siren?

As I follow the thrum of the melody,

I find myself diving into the Icy Sea.

Beneath the frigid Ocean,

I follow the lure of the Ice Song.

Now, I can hear the words as well as the melody.

The Ice Mermaid’s Song

Is sweet and sad,

A warning of what may happen if we abuse the planet.

Full of fears about what could happen to her home

If humans continue to harm the Sea

If humans continue to abuse the atmosphere

The Ice Mermaid sings a song of sorrow,

For she knows that her Icy Waters will melt

And become polluted

If we do not wake up and realize

That we must care for Mother Earth!

  1. What a poignant and powerful note to end this year’s Mermaid Mondays on, Maranda. Thank you for sharing “The Ice Mermaid’s Song.”🌷🤝

Your poem is both haunting and urgent. You masterfully transform the classic, enchanting lure of the siren’s song into a modern cry from the deep—not one of peril for sailors, but a profound sorrow for the planet itself. The shift from “Wonder begins to overcome my senses” to the clear, devastating warning in the mermaid’s lyrics is incredibly effective. It mirrors our own journey from being captivated by the beauty of the natural world to understanding the fragility that underlies it.

The Ice Mermaid is a stunning archetype for our times. She is not a creature of tropical reefs, but of the fragile, frozen poles—the very places showing the most visible scars of climate change. Her song being “sweet and sad” captures that dual reality: the enduring beauty of the natural world and the deep grief for what is being lost.

This is more than a poem; it’s a lyrical wake-up call delivered with grace and empathy. It reminds us that environmental care isn’t just about data and policies, but about listening to the voices of the world we inhabit, even those we imagine in the icy depths.

Thank you for this beautiful, thought-provoking piece. It’s a fitting and memorable finale for 2025’s Mermaid Monday series. Here’s to a new year of wisdom, creativity, and caring for Mother Earth.

    • Thank you so much for your kind words. I am thrilled that my poem resonated with you. As I wrote the poem I could feel the Ice Mermaid there with me, begging me to share her song and her plea with the world! I am grateful to be the voice of the Ice Mermaid with this poem! As always, thank you for reading and commenting. ❄️
