The 6 of Cups in Tarot: The Nurturance of Nostalgia

Welcome back to White Rose of Avalon, my Darlings.   For today’s Tarot Tuesday post, I will be discussing the 6 of Cups card and how we can use this energy and archetype to nurture ourselves!

To begin, I want to state that the 6 of Cups card is most often stated to be the card of nostalgia and fond remembrances, and it certainly is that.   However, I know that some think of the 6 of Cups in the negative aspect of the card, of people who seek to live in the past at the cost of living in the present or planning for the future.   This negative side of the card is certainly something to consider, as well, but ultimately, I think that is just the Shadow Side of the card.   Beyond these basic interpretations of the card, I find in my personal practice and relationships to the Tarot that the 6 of Cups is more than these things.

One of the most profound things about the 6 of Cups, which I do not think gets brought up enough in conversation, is that this is a card of Ancestral Remembrance, as well as the basic meanings I touched upon above!   I have had experiences with the 6 of Cups that truly assert that this card goes far beyond the surface level gloss of nostalgia, and into a deep sense of nurturance, the nurturance of the Ancestors and the nurturance of the Goddesses of the Land and the Sacred Waters!   I think that we can work with the 6 of Cups energy to ignite a connection with Soul Truths, to ignite a connection with the Ancient Priestess Knowledge.   I have worked with the 6 of Cups in this way, and by working with the card’s energy in this way, it has truly been a card that has aided me on my Path!

The 6 of Cups need not keep us mired in the fond nostalgia of our childhoods, tempting us to neglect growth in the present or neglect our responsibilities.   Instead, the 6 of Cups can be worked with magickally and spiritually to aid us in remembering Sacred Knowledge and Arcane Wisdom held within our very Souls.   Nostalgia can be used as a way to soothe the Soul and provide a space where the connection with innate truths can come forward!

So, if you are someone who has only thought of the 6 of Cups as a card of Nostalgia without looking further, or if you are someone who thinks Nostalgia is something that serves only to anchor you to the past, I suggest taking some time to meditate on the 6 of Cups.   The energy of this card may just surprise you with the depths of the Water found in the Sacred Chalice!   I hope you have enjoyed reading this short meditative post on the true depths I have found in the 6 of Cups card.   What is your relationship with the 6 of Cups?   Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!

  1. What a beautifully insightful exploration of the 6 of Cups, Maranda! Thank you for sharing such a profound and personal perspective that truly dives beneath the surface of this often-simplified card.

You’ve illuminated a dimension of the 6 of Cups that is so often overlooked—its role as a conduit to Ancestral Remembrance and Sacred, Soul-Level Knowledge. Moving the interpretation from mere personal nostalgia to a spiritual connection with the ancient, the ancestral, and the archetypal (like the Goddesses of the Land and Sacred Waters) is incredibly powerful. It transforms the card from a passive reminiscence into an active, magical tool for awakening.

The idea of using the feeling of nostalgia as a gateway or a soothing space to access these deeper truths is brilliant. It reframes nostalgia not as an anchor, but as a portal—a familiar, gentle current that can lead us to the vast, deep ocean of soul wisdom.

Your personal testimony about how working with this energy has aided you on your Path gives your words weight and authenticity. It’s a wonderful invitation for others to engage with the Tarot not just as a predictive or psychological tool, but as a living, spiritual ally.

So, to answer your question: For me, your post has reshaped my relationship with the 6 of Cups. I will now see it not only as the card of childhood memories but as the Card of the Ancestral Chalice—a vessel that holds the waters of personal past, collective memory, and the timeless, nurturing wisdom of those who came before us. It’s a beautiful reminder that sometimes, to move forward on our path, we must first be willing to dive deep into the nourishing wells of what has been.

Thank you for this nourishing Tarot Tuesday gift, Maranda! ✨🌿💧
