Welcome back to White Rose of Avalon, my Darlings.   For today’s blog post, I will be sharing my review of Seeking Faery: An Introduction to the Hidden World of the Fae by Emily Carding!   This was another book that my husband, Andrew, gave me for my birthday in September, so I want to begin by thanking him.   I have had this book on my radar for the last few years, and I am glad to have finally read it.   I was not surprised that I enjoyed the book, given that I thoroughly enjoyed the author’s first book about Faery Magick, Faery Craft.   

Now, onto the actual review of Seeking Faery.   This book is beautifully illustrated with artwork by Siolo Thompson, making it an even more delightful treat to flip through.   I love that it is hardcover and was designed to be carried around with you (as it is rather small)!   The book covers a lot of the basics of beginning to build a relationship with the Fae and working with the Fae Realms.    I have to address that, while I am far from a beginner at this subject, I do always like to read different authors’ experiences and insights about working with the Fae.   After all, I believe that we all have insights to share when it comes to our unique viewpoints on a subject.   

Carding gives the reader a lot of exercises to perform and encourages performing each multiple times before moving on to the next, which is a great way to learn a new skill.   The structure of the book is well planned out, as it is designed to build upon itself in more ways than just the exercises.   This means that a newcomer to working with the Fae can slowly read the book and learn things in bite-sized chunks, which was intentional by the author (as explained in the introduction).   I really appreciate this approach to formatting the book, as it is something that I think will appeal to beginners.   I also love the inclusion of retellings of famous pieces of Faerylore at the end of each chapter.   And I have to say, the book gets major bonus points for one of those retellings being about my beloved Melusine!   After all, as a Priestess of Melusine and the creator and teacher of The Melusine Mysteries, I am always delighted when she appears in a book.   This time it was unexpected, as I did not know that Melusine was one of the pieces of folklore the author had included, which made for a delightful surprise when reading.

So, yes, I do highly recommend this book for beginners studying Faerylore and desiring to work with the Fae, as there are some great exercises included and lots of pieces of Faerylore!   The author even included a list of suggested further resources to continue your studies, which is always appreciated.   If you are, like me, not a beginner, the book is still a delightful read with beautiful artwork and some lovely exercises to add to your practices if you wish.
