Welcome back to White Rose of Avalon, my Darlings. For today’s post, I will be discussing Cancer and Ashlesha energies of Sidereal and Vedic Astrology! This is a huge part of what has been solidified for me: that Sidereal and Vedic Astrology have a more profound impact on my life than the more traditional Western Tropical Astrology. While I do find that Tropical Astrology has its place, I do not find nearly as much resonance as compared to Sideral and Vedic Astrology. That is why the more that I study Sidereal and Vedic Astrology, the more I want to discuss those instead of traditional Western Tropical Astrology.
Now that I have gone over my feelings about the different types of Astrology, I want to get into part of how I found my personal connection to Sidereal and Vedic Astrology. For this post, I am going to just focus on Sidereal Cancer and Ashlesha Nakshatra, which are the signs of my Ascendant (or Lagna, as it is called in Vedic), instead of also going into my Sun and Moon placements. Sidereal Astrology, much like Tropical Astrology, holds a deep focus on your Ascendant sign, because your Ascendant sign gives you your houses and gives you your chart ruler. So, being a Cancer Rising, Cancer is my first house, which also informs that my Midheaven is in Aries, and my chart ruler is the Moon, given that the Moon rules the sign of Cancer. This differs in Vedic Astrology a bit, as the chart ruler is actually the ruler of your Moon Nakshatra, but the Lagna still has a large impact on your chart, still placing houses and such. Ashlesha, as a Nakshatra, is ruled by Mercury, but given that it falls in the sign of Cancer, it still has a Lunar connection. Ashlesha is also a Water Nakshatra (as Nakshatras have elemental rulers as well), falling in the Water sign of Cancer!
Given this dual Watery nature of Cancer and Ashlesha, you also get a lot of emphasis on the Psychic nature of Ashlesha. Ashlesha is a deeply sexual energy, often stated that those with strong Ashlesha placements may have hypnotic eyes. The allure and sexuality of Ashlesha are profound, and if taken to a dark place, can even possibly turn somewhat Vampiric in their ability to manipulate. However, Ashlesha is not a purely negative sign, as these traits can be used in a positive way, tapping into them for Psychic and Mystic purposes! The sexuality of Ashlesha is certainly related to the fluidity and sexuality of Water as an element, just as it shares an emotional nature with the Water element. We can even relate the two sides of Ashlesha to types of Water Faeries, with the darker and more dangerous side being the Siren and the softer and more mystical side being the Mermaid!
Turning back to Sidereal Cancer, it is often said that Cancer is the ultimate Water sign. Cancer is the Cardinal Water sign, which shows its leadership energy and the beginning of Water in the Zodiac Wheel (as the first Water sign to come after Aries), the beginning of a season. Cancer is often seen as the Mother of Astrology, being highly emotional, nurturing, and maternal. This can also be related back to sexuality, as you cannot be a Mother without first being a sexually mature woman! The rulership by the Moon also relates to why Cancer is considered the ultimate Water sign by many, as the Moon controls the tides of the Ocean, directly linking to Water. Moreover, the Moon also controls the menstrual cycles of women, linking to sexuality, fertility, and Motherhood, as well as the Divine Feminine, more generally speaking!
So, the reason I find so much resonance with my Sidereal and Vedic Astrology Ascendant sign and Nakshatra is largely related to my deep connection to the Water element and the Moon. As I have discussed before, I have had a profound Kundalini Awakening that showed me my Soul Origins, where I found out that I am an Incarnated Mermaid. This was shocking, but made the utmost of sense to me, given that I have always been drawn to the Water, and never feared for my safety in open Water. This means that while I have respect for Tropical Astrology, the lack of Water in my chart was quite confusing, but I had chalked it up to my need for Water in real life being a balance to the lack of Water in my chart. However, when I began to study Sidereal and Vedic Astrology, I found that my chart was very Watery, with a Cancer Ascendant, and both my Ascendant Nakshatra of Ashlesha and my Sun and Moon Nakshatra (this is the same, as I was born on a New Moon) of Purva Phalguni are water-ruled Nakshatras!
The personality aspects presented in descriptions of Cancer, especially as they pertain to the Ascendant and Ashlesha Nakshatra, are definitely descriptions that make me feel both seen and even called out at times. That is how you know there is true resonance, when not just the positive, but also the negative aspects of a personality description ring true! There is a deeply nurturing and deeply Psychic nature present here, but one that can seem cold when it is not developed. I definitely could see this in myself, as I did try to keep my own emotions masked and tried to appear distant (and even cold) when I was a teenager, out of fear and discomfort. I did not want others to see me cry, unless I really trusted them, as I did not want to appear vulnerable. That is because I cry a lot and I always have, and I knew that letting others see me cry could make me vulnerable to their judgment or even to being taken advantage of. Moreover, when I was hiding my true emotions as a teenager, I also learned that I could use my emotions and my attractiveness to manipulate, and I did do so on occasion, but luckily, I never went too far down that path. Now, I do not just cry in sadness, but at any time of great emotion, and I have thankfully emotionally matured to the more nurturing, empathetic, and willing to show vulnerability place that mature Cancers and Ashlesha natives are said to shine in! It merely took time and personal growth, but reading about the immature side of these energies definitely was a wake-up call to just how much it aligns with my personality and my life.
