Welcome back to White Rose of Avalon, my Darlings. For this week’s Femme Fatale Friday, I will be discussing Lorelei, the Rhine River Spirit! I have mentioned the Lorelei (or Loreleis, as it is alluded to that there could be more than one) in previous posts, but I have never devoted a whole post to this very interesting Rhine River Faery.
Now, to begin with, Lorelei shares her name with a Rock on the Rhine River, where she is known to appear. One of the most common origins for the story of Lorelei is that she was once a living human young woman. However, it should be noted that there are different stories of how she became the Mermaid of the Rhine River she is today.
The first version of the story I want to discuss in this post is where Lorelei was so beautiful that she was given so much attention, which ended up making all of the other women in her town grow incredibly jealous. The other women were, in fact, so jealous of Lorelei that they led a witch hunt against her. She was accused of witchcraft and put on trial. However, the Bishop who was brought in to conduct her trial was so moved by her beauty and sweetness that he could not bring himself to have her put to death, instead hiring Knights to take her to a nunnery. Lorelei wanted to die, though, as she had been mourning her long-lost love, who had died in the Rhine River long ago. When they were passing the River, she convinced the Knights to allow her to stop and look at the water, where she wept for the only man she would ever love. It was then that Lorelei threw herself into the Rhine River, ending her human life and becoming the Rhine River Spirit!
The other version of the story that is popularly told is that Loerlei was abandoned by her lover, but her allure drew the other men of the town her way. As this caused quite a scandal in her town, she was imprisoned, and that is when it was decided she would be taken to a nunnery, so she could not cause any more trouble. From there, the story is the same: Lorelei asked to see her beloved Rhine River one last time, and her guards relented, which would lead to her throwing herself into the River.
So, no matter the version, when we look at Lorelei having a human origin, she is always said to take her own life, which is what has her transform into a Nixie (as some versions of the story call her, given that Nixie is a Water Faery found in Germany and Poland). Lorelei would go on to cause many deaths after she became the Rhine River Mermaid. She is known to lure sailors to her by playing her harp and singing, which leads to their deaths on the treacherous rocks!
Now, this is not an uncommon occurrence to see once human spirits who become attached to a Watery locale become vengeful, so Lorelei brings to mind that energy. However, the Lorelei who was once human is, as I mentioned, not alone, with some people believing that there are many Loreleis. This begs the question: did all of them begin as human women who threw themselves into the Rhine? Or did the human Lorelei become one of them because she fit the requirements of becoming a Lorelei? There is no solid answer to these questions, but I will state that given her tragic story and her beauty, it is unsurprising that Lorelei would end up joining the ranks of these Rhine River Sirens!
I hope you have enjoyed reading a bit about Lorelei, the Rhine River Mermaid. What is your favorite version of the Lorelei story? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!
