Welcome back to White Rose of Avalon, my Darlings. For today’s blog post, I will be discussing the connection between Water and Mirrors!
So, as we all know, Mermaids are famously connected with Mirrors as one of their primary symbols. As Mermaids are Water Faeries, this provides quite the obvious link between Mirrors and Water. Beyond that, Mirrors and Water are both seen as Portals, magickally speaking! Now, I want to begin by stating that there is a clear alignment between Water and Mirrors in that we can see our reflection in both. This allows us to see things in a Mirror Image (which leads to Mirror Universes and Realms that have been utilized for Horror and Fantasy stories)!
In the Celtic context, Water is one of the most important Portals to the Otherworld. Avalon is accessed via the Barge sailing to Avalon, and the Mists being parted to access the Sacred Isle. In folklore, we have references to the bottom of Lakes also being Portals, like in the tale of the Lady of Llyn y Fan Fach, where the Otherworldly Faeryland is accessed through the bottom of the Lake! Excalibur was given to Arthur by the Lady of the Lake, rising from the Water. Later, Excalibur was returned to the Lady of the Lake by Bedivere, tossing the blade into a Lake, where it was caught by an arm reaching out of the Water! Beyond these Portals of Water, we have an interesting connection between Water and Mirrors in the form of small bodies of Water being called Mirror (either colloquially or as an actual name).
That brings me to the subject of how Water and Mirror Scrying are often much the same thing. While we are using different methods of Scrying technically, the process is much the same. You are usually in a dark room with only the light of a candle illuminating the Scrying Surface. You will either see images on the Scrying Surface, or if you are like me, you may end up Astral Projecting when you are Scrying. Now, this is not what happens to everyone, and sometimes I do have a Scrying Session that does not end in Astral Projection, but I usually do end up Astral Projecting to Avalon or another Faeryland!
The energy of Scrying is an interesting way of connecting to the Otherworld, especially the Watery places in the Faeryland (like Avalon). Whenever I Scry into either Water or Mirrors, I can feel the comfort of emotional well-being. I have to say that the Astral Projection that I experience also seems to show just how easily Water and Mirrors can be used as Portals, as they are the Portals I use so easily to access the Otherworld on a regular basis in my practice!
I hope you have enjoyed this short look at the connection between Mirrors and Water as Portals. What is your favorite way to connect with the Otherworld? Do you enjoy Water or Mirror Scrying? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!
