Sunshine & Seafoam: A Poem

Welcome back to White Rose of Avalon, my Darlings.   For today’s blog post, I will be sharing a poem inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Mermaid, as it is one of my all-time favorite fairytales!

Sunshine & Seafoam

by Maranda Wabik

Swimming through the Ocean Deep

Flipping my fins to explore

Staring up at the Sunshine radiating into the Sea

Wondering about the human world

Oh what secrets do humans keep

A desire wells within when I learn of Immortal Souls

How can I get one of my own, I do implore

Looking for a way to be truly free

I meet with the Sea Witch

Even though her price is steep

Losing my tongue and my voice

My tail is split to form legs

Each footstep on land feels like knives

But what would have been another choice?

Meeting the Prince makes my heart sing

For all I need do is get his Wedding Ring

Then I will gain an Immortal Soul

Something to make me feel whole

Sadly, how could he love a woman with no voice?

He pretended affection

But soon his sights drifted to another woman

One he thought, saved him, for she took credit for my deed

When they wed

I knew I would soon be dead

My sisters tried to see my freed

From my bargain with the Sea Witch

Giving up their locks

For a blade to kill the Prince and break my curse

Ah, yet I could not commit murder

So, that is how I turned to

SEAFOAM

On a sunshiney day

The Spirit’s of the Air have given me hope

That I can truly earn my Immortal Soul

If I can do good deeds

For the next three centuries!

~I hope you have enjoyed this poetic retelling of the story from the Mermaid’s perspective.   Do you love this story as much as I do?   Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!
