Welcome back to White Rose of Avalon, my Darlings. Today’s Tarot Thursday post is a review of the Tempest Tarot Deck by Maisy Bristol! Now, I have wanted to get a Mermaid Tarot Deck for the longest time, but I never found one that truly spoke to me enough to actually purchase before finding this one. However, I know that I truly needed a Mermaid Tarot Deck to have as an option for my Readings here at White Rose of Avalon, as I am so deeply connected to Mermaid energy, and I wanted to have more deck options with Mermaids (other than my Mermaid Oracles). That is why I was so delighted to find this brand-new Nautical Tarot Deck, which literally just released at the end of April 2025. It was well worth the wait to find the ideal Mermaidy Tarot to use for my professional Readings!
You may wonder, why this deck? What is so special about the Tempest Tarot Deck that makes it different? Firstly, the name really caught me, as I love a Shakespeare reference, especially when said reference is to one of my all-time favorite plays! To be clear, I am not certain if the deck author chose the name as a reference to The Tempest by Shakespeare specifically, as it may just be a reference to storms at Sea in general. However, I cannot help but read this as such! The Tempest is even more important to me, not only because it is a fantastical story set on a magickal island, but because it is the origin of my name. You see, Shakespeare invented the name Miranda (for the female lead character of the play), so that makes it super special to me. Obviously, my mother chose to change the spelling when she named me, but it does not change that this is the origin of my name!
Beyond the fact that the name of this deck drew me in, the artwork was what really sold me on this being my ideal Mermaid Deck. The artwork is evocative, yet pretty simple, making it a truly beautiful deck to read with. The most important thing about my choice of this deck, relating to its artwork, is that I love the color choices made for this deck. It is not overly saturated in color, instead being truly watery colors, that are mostly desaturated, with the blues and golds really standing out, like the world under the Sea really looks! This is what you can truly think the coloration may be in the Ocean, with colors of fish and coral present, as well as colors that are found in shipwrecks, but those colors become muted by the water. This is something so refreshing, as it shows the true depth of the Sea.
I hope you have enjoyed this review of this amazing Nautical Tarot Deck. Are you interested in getting a reading with this deck? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!
