Welcome back to White Rose of Avalon, my Darlings. For today’s blog post, I am sharing my thoughts on the book How to Become a Mermaid: Embodying the Elemental Energy of Water by Elyrria Swann! I first read this book back in 2022, but I never posted a review of it at the time, as I was still new to blogging here and had not yet shared as much of my spiritual journey (or claimed the title of Priestess publicly). Now that I have re-read the book, and am working publicly as a Priestess here at White Rose of Avalon, it seemed the ideal time to review this very interesting book!
So, long-time readers will know that I love everything about Mermaids. I have been writing about them from a folklore standpoint (and a fantasy fiction standpoint) from the very beginning of this blog, back when I wrote about things from a primarily academic level and did not share personal spiritual beliefs and experiences. Oh, how far I have come! In any case, it has long been clear that I have a very special and profound connection to all forms of Watery Faeries.
This adoration of all things Mermaid means that I will read just about any book about Mermaids I can get my hands on. The title of this book thoroughly hooked me, as it was a book truly about living as a Mermaid. When I began to read the book, I knew that I definitely had something in common with the author. We both had very profound experiences at a young age with the Mermaids, and knew that our connection to them went deeper than simple fascination or wanting to commune with them.
A large portion of this short book is devoted to discussing what it is like to not only communicate and work with the Mermaids on the Astral Plane, but also to what it is like to live as an Incarnated Mermaid. For those unfamiliar with the term, Incarnated Mermaid is exactly what it sounds like, a Mermaid Soul incarnated in a human body! There are many people who have memories of being a Mermaid in a past life, and have been given direct communication from the Mermaids that this is because they were originally a Mermaid themselves. Needless to say, I felt very seen by this, as I have known this was true about me for many years, since childhood, really. From thinking I was a Changeling when I was young, to being told by Mermaids and other Water Faeries that I was ‘one of them’, to seeing and communicating with all sorts of Fae folk, to having a deep and abiding connection with the Water element (my parents used to say I was like a fish because I would spend all my time during the Summer months in the pool).
Now, I do realize how crazy that statement sounds, which is why I never reviewed this book before. However, it is very true, and possibly not as crazy now, coming from an Avalonian Priestess who works with the Fae and Mermaids regularly, and is devoted to the Mermaid Goddess Melusine. I even created a whole Online Class here about Melusine! It is clear that this intense connection that I have always felt with Faeries of all sorts, but especially Watery Fae and Mermaids, is because not only do I have Faery Blood in this human life (from my Irish Ancestry), but also because my Soul has always been Mermaid in origin.
Clearly, I would highly recommend this book to anyone with an open mind and a deep connection to Mermaids. I hope you have enjoyed reading my thoughts about why this book had such a profound impact on me. I also hope that you found my confession about my Mermaid Soul to be interesting.
