Welcome back to White Rose of Avalon, my Darlings.   Today’s Tarot Tuesday blog post is about how the combined energies of the Empress and the Lovers cards in Tarot are so perfectly aligned with May’s energy!   As it is the end of May, I thought that this would be a great way to celebrate the last week of May.    

So, obviously, the Lovers card is aligned with Beltane and May energy.   Many of the Lovers cards are actually set on Beltane.   My favorite examples of Beltane-oriented Lovers cards include The Wildwood Tarot (featuring Robin Hood and Maid Marian), The Sacred Circle Tarot (featuring a Beltane celebration), and Le Tarot arthurien (featuring Lancelot and Guinevere beside many Hawthorn, or Apple, trees in bloom).   The romance of Spring is shown in the connection between Springtime energy and Lover Goddesses, as well as the concept of a Spring Fling.   The newly blooming flowers and everything coming to life in full bloom definitely align with the energy of Love and Romance!    That is why I am so delighted that my Wedding was in May (although we had originally intended to get married on Halloween/Samhain), as it fits the energy of the time of year so well.   I am actually so delighted to be able to have our Anniversary at this lovely time of year, and truly happy that we ended up getting married in May instead of October!

Now, the Empress card is quite obviously a great example of the May energy as well.   The Empress is truly the Lover Goddess and Faery Queen who has made the marriage to the King on behalf of the land made manifest.   She is the one who blesses the land with Fertility and Abundance, providing Prosperity to the King.   This energy is also what creates the connection between the Faery Queen and the energy of Beltane and May.   In fact, in some decks, the Empress is also featured as one of the Lovers.   This is the case in Le Tarot arthrurien with Guinevere appearing on both cards!

Overall, these two cards have been entwined in my mind as ideal cards to represent the Abundance and Heart-centered energy of Spring so well.   I hope you have enjoyed this short exploration of why these two cards are so connected to May’s bounty.   What other cards do you think of as holding a deep connection to Beltane and the energy of May?   Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!
