The Fire Element: Kindling the Hearthfire in Winter

Welcome back to White Rose of Avalon, my Darlings.   Today’s post is about the importance of the Fire Element to warm us and inspire us during Winter’s Frosty Embrace.   As we slowly make our way through the Wheel of the Year and are nearly at the midpoint between Winter Solstice and the Vernal Equinox, the Sun begins to warm the land.   But until the ground becomes warm in Spring and the Snow ends its falling during the Winter, we are still wrapped in the cloak of the Frost’s Snowy Embrace!   With that in mind, I thought that the Fire element, specifically the Hearthfire was an ideal topic to discuss today.

The Fire Element is the element of passion, vitality, warmth, creation (through forging), and anger.   When we think of Fire, we often think of its ability to incite intense emotions, like lust and, as already stated, anger.   However, it must be noted that in the Celtic context, Fire is not seen as an element, as the elements in the Celtic context relate to the three realms of Land, Sea, and Sky.   Therefore, instead, Fire is seen as being an intrinsic need for life, going beyond an elemental tie!   Fire is related to the Sun, so like the Sun, Fire is essential for all life to function, especially during the cold months.   Also, like the Sun, Fire is equal parts necessary and dangerous, as when not handled with care, both can burn you!

In Tarot, Fire rules the suit of Wands, with the Three of Wands being what I consider the card of the Hearthfire.   I consider the Three of Wands to be so linked to Hearthfire in particular, because the card is all about sending out feelers (like a King sending Knights on a Quest) in the desire to draw resources closer to a stable home base.  To further cement this point, some decks literally have a cozy little family on the Three of Wands card, like in the Tarot of the Hidden Realm!

As Winter is slowly drawing to a close, even with the temperatures still frigidly cold, we are welcoming the return of the Sun.   This return of the Sun is also the return of the fiery rays that warm the land!   Until the Sun has heated the land, we remain in our warm homes piled with blankets, basking in the heat of the fire (if we are lucky enough to have a fireplace) and the glow of candle flames.   This is truly the Hearthfire energy, the cozy warmth we feel from the stove and oven when we cook nutritious foods and brew cozy hot tea, the warmth of blankets and our favorite heat source, and the body heat of cuddling with our loved ones and our pets!    This is how we enjoy the fiery delights in the dark coldness of Winter’s plight.

I hope you have enjoyed reading my short ruminations on the Fire Element in Winter.   What is your favorite way to tap into fiery energy in the cold months?   Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!
