Movie Suggestions for When You Want to Feel Like a Medieval Maiden

Welcome back to White Rose of Avalon, my Darlings.   Today’s post is a fun and light-hearted one where I give you movie suggestions based on how you want to feel.   In this case, these are suggestions for films that give off the energy of a Medieval Maiden, or Damsel, if you will!   I thought that this would be an interesting post.   Please let me know if you like this type of post, as I may do other similar posts, films to watch for other vibes, or even books to read for certain vibes.   These films are not ranked, but I do have them broken into two categories, Legendary Films and Fairytale Films.    I also want to note that I only included live-action films in this list.   Without further ado, let’s look at nine films to watch when you want to feel like a Medieval Maiden!

LEGENDARY FILMS

Tristan + Isolde (2006)

~This film is such a lovely one to watch to immerse yourself in the romantic tale of these two iconic Arthurian lovers.   I have adored this film since I was a teenager, watching it often, given that I have always been a hopeless romantic and have always had an abiding love for Arthurian legends.    The whole film definitely gives off the energy of Medieval Maidenhood and romance!

Camelot (1967)

~Speaking of Arthurian lovers, this film is the adaptation of the Broadway musical of the same name.   The romance between Lancelot and Guinevere is told through song, from a beginning of dislike to a deep and abiding love story!   The songs and imagery really make me feel like I am living in an Enchanted Medieval Dream.

Excalibur (1981)

~This film is probably the most iconic Arthurian adaptation!   So, clearly, it is a perfect film to watch when you want to feel like you are living in a Fantasy Medieval World!

The Mists of Avalon (2001)

~This is the adaptation of the novel, which is one of my favorite books of all time, even if the writer committed atrocities.    The novel is proof of the importance of separating the art from the artist, plus, I do attest that the novel reads like it had been channeled.   This mini-series (as it technically is a mini-series that is a total of three hours) is not as good as the novel, but it is still a comfort watch for me, due to the imagery and the feeling of being immersed in this world!   It is very well done for a made-for-TV mini-series from this era, and it boasts a great cast.   So, it is something to check out if you love the book and have never seen it or if you have trouble separating the art from the artist and do not want to read the book.

FAIRYTALE FILMS

La Belle et la Bete (1946)

~The original Jean Cocteau film of Beauty and the Beast is such a beautiful and surrealistic take on the fairytale.    I always feel completely caught up in the Enchantment of this lovely film!   It is also fun to watch this one multiple times, as you can pick up on new insights, especially seeing where this film has inspired other fantasy films, during each new viewing.

La Belle et la Bete (2014)

~This is the last good live-action adaptation of this story.   It is another French film version of Beauty and the Beast.   As this one is in color, whereas the above one is black and white, it gives a very different vision to the story.   I love watching them back to back to experience the different interpretations!

Snow White: A Tale of Terror (1997)

~This is the most fun live-action adaptation of this fairytale.   It is full of dark fairytale energy and really nice visuals, making it a great watch to embrace a little darker Medieval Maiden energy!

Ever After: A Cinderella Story (1998)

~This is my favorite film adaptation of Cinderella, even if it is less fantastical (which is odd for me, as I do love the fantastical).   I have watched this one countless times since childhood, and it never ceases to make me feel like I am living in a Medieval Dream!

Cinderella (2015)

~Finally, I just had to shout out this Disney live-action film, which is one of the very few good ones!   It adds dimension to the original animated feature, making for a film that really does have Medieval Enchantment.   If you never gave this one a chance, I highly recommend checking it out!   I want to note that while I love Maleficent even more, it is not on this list because that film has more Faery Enchantment vibes than just Medieval Maiden vibes in my opinion!

~I hope you have enjoyed this list.   Would you add any other films that fit the vibes of the list?   Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!

Note on Image: The image at the top of the post is a painting of Tristan and Isolde by John William Waterhouse.   I found the artwork on https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Waterhousem_Tristan_and_Isolde.jpg.
