Ruminations on the Air Element

Welcome back to White Rose of Avalon, my Darlings.   Today’s blog post is about embracing the Air Element.   Air is an element that I have been feeling myself drawing ever closer to, as I have really started to acknowledge that one of my key gifts is Communication!   Additionally, I have such a love for the purifying energy of the Winds and often feel a sense of whimsy in dancing around and having a weightless feeling.   All of that is as much part of the Air Element, as is the Mental Aspect of the Self.

My husband has long told me that Communication is one of my major gifts.   I have certainly come to realize that my ability to reach people with my voice and being a storyteller does relate directly to my being a writer and poet.   Communication is something that is deeply linked to the Air Element, hence why I am beginning this blog post talking about Communication as a gift.   After all, what is Communication, if not the ability to share one’s knowledge and thoughts with others in ways that present the information skillfully?   That means that Communication is an active part of the intellectual process, so it is aligned with the Air Element.

It is kind of strange that I have not really discussed my connection to the Air Element earlier, as I have a lot of this energy within me.   Unlike Earth, which I have a deep connection to that has been cemented largely by my studying of Herbalism, even with a lot of the Earth element represented in my Natal Chart, or Water that I have long worked with on a very profound level being so aligned with many species of Water Fae and Watery Faery Queens, Air is connected with me through my Imaginative energy.

The Air Element is aligned with the Head and the Mental Aspect of the Self, as I stated at the beginning of this post.   For those familiar with the Enneagram, which I have discussed briefly in some posts in the past, I will state that I am an Enneagram type 7.   For a little background, the Enneagram is a personality typing system broken into nine main types, with three types in each category of Head, Heart, or Gut type.    That is how my being an Enneagram 7 is connected with this post, as type 7 is a Head type, making the type one that has a good deal of Air Element energy!   Beyond that, the fact that I am a Virgo Sun and Moon in Astrology links my energy to Mercury and the often Air Element association of that planet, including also ruling the Air Element sign of Gemini.   So, yes, although I do not discuss feeling an affinity for the Air Element often, it is certainly there.

This post is partially inspired by my husband Andrew, not only saying that Communication is one of my greatest gifts but also by the fact that many people who know both of us tend to reference how much his energy helps to ground mine.   I am often in my creative cycle dreaming up new visions and possibilities for the future, and I love being in that state of inspiration, but it can leave one feeling adrift if it is not balanced out.   Both my husband’s more grounding energy and my own work with the Earth Element have gone a long way in helping me feel more grounded in the present moment!   It is interesting, as Creativity needs all the elements to one extent or another, and by working to find elemental balance and harmony can be a great aid to the creative process.

All of this is actually something that I have been ruminating on for the last couple of months.   As I began to realize that we need not rely on a connection to only one or two elements, as it is quite possible to work with all of them.   In fact, working with each element in turn does tend to bring about balance and give nuance to our experiences and our magickal and spiritual practices, and as stated above creative pursuits.   Ways that I have always incorporated the Air Element into my magickal and spiritual practices include burning of incense (which is honestly something I do constantly, as it is my main daily offering to the Faery Queens), and my deep and abiding connection to birds.

Now, a love of birds in a magickal and spiritual sense is the one thing about the Air Element that I have written about and discussed quite a lot on this blog!   I even named my three Patreon Tiers after Sacred Birds associated with Faery Queens and featured in The Mabinogion, Starling, Owl, and Raven.   At the end of the day, I am glad I have been ruminating on my connection to the Air Element with all of its wispy whimsy and how active it is in my life, as it has allowed me to gain some new insights into my life and personality.   Some of these things were truths I already knew yet seldom thought about, while others were truly new insights.

I hope this post ruminating on my own connection to the Air Element has inspired you to think about how you connect to the elements and all of the beauty of Nature that surrounds you.   How is the Air Element active in your life?   Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!

Note on Image: The image at the top of the post is a lovely piece of faery artwork by Brian Froud that I thought aligned with the energy of this post.
