Welcome back to White Rose of Avalon, my Darlings. Today’s post is about the Queen of Pentacles and what she can teach us about survival! Winter is a time when we are definitely more inclined to hunker down and go within. For our ancestors, Winter was a time when survival was most important, as they had to ensure they had enough of a food supply, as well as other supplies, to last the long, cold months!
In traditional seasonal interpretations of the Tarot suits, the Pentacles suit is associated with Winter due to the Earth element being aligned with stability, dependability, and survival. This means that of all the Queens of Tarot, the Queen of Pentacles is the one who can best teach us to survive life’s trials and make it through the icy cold uncertainty of Winter and into the warmth of Spring.
The Queen of Pentacles is, at her core, the nurturing and supportive energy of the Earth Mama, the one who will protect and soothe us when we are feeling out of balance. She also holds the sexuality associated with the Faery Queen, who made a marriage to a King on behalf of the Land. The Queen of Pentacles brings blessings unto the King through not only the fertility she brings to the land but also the fertility of her body to birth his heir! Her allure is not the dangerous allure of the Femme Fatale but rather the comforting allure of the one who will care for those she loves fiercely. This is why The Wildwood Tarot chose to have the Queen of Pentacles represented by a Bear, as she truly is a Mama Bear happily protecting her cubs! While there is more than just the motherly energy to the Queen of Pentacles (as I noted above), it is her maternal energy that is most associated with the season of Winter.
We can lean on the Queen of Pentacles when we are feeling unmoored and scared, with her gentle Earth Mama energy being there to provide us a soft place to land. We can also deepen into her energy by trying to be that soft place to land (and a gentle, protective person) for those that we love. I find that being a nurturing figure to those that I love can actually help me to feel less uncertain during trying times, as being helpful to others tends to put my own stresses into perspective!
I hope you have enjoyed this short post with my thoughts about how the Queen of Pentacles can help us weather difficult times, reminding us that we will survive. What is your relationship with the Queen of Pentacles? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!
