The Persephone Archetype: Balancing the Energies of the Princess and the Queen

Welcome back to White Rose of Avalon, my Darlings.   Today’s post is about the Persephone archetype and how this energy can help us learn to balance the Princess with the Queen.   I have written before about my deep connection to the Persephone archetype, as out of the seven Goddess archetypes of Goddesses in Everywoman, Persephone is my secondary archetype (with Aphrodite as my primary).   This means that the energy of the Persephone archetype has been with me forever, along with the Aphrodite archetype.

Persephone is the Goddess of Spring, as well as the Queen of the Underworld.   That makes the Persephone archetype deeper than simply being the Maiden.    Of course, Persephone begins the myth as Kore, which literally translates to mean Maiden, and she is the eternal daughter, the eternal girl.   Many compare the Persephone archetype, the Princess, the Maiden, as being the feminine version of the Peter Pan archetype.   Meaning that she is a girl who never desires to grow up, but that is simply the immature aspect of the Persephone archetype!

In the early life of someone with a primary Persephone archetype or just someone with a deep connection to the Persephone archetype, it is very common to have a desire to stay childlike for as long as possible.   That is the immature Persephone energy, as I have stated, and it can lead to not being able to make choices for yourself if the archetype is never allowed to mature.   This happens if the Persephone archetype has a very overbearing parent or other loved one who wants so badly to protect and nurture that the Persephone archetype person never has the opportunity to make mistakes and grow up.   That is the dark side of the Persephone archetype, remaining only the Eternal Maiden, an eternal child-woman, who waits for someone else to take care of her, and can also lead to manipulative tendencies, as that is the only way the Persephone archetype person can get her way!   At the end of the day, even the childlike and youthful energy of the Persephone archetype can be used well, as it is a way to keep childlike wonder alive and help others heal their inner child.

However, that ability to help others with Maiden energy can only happen if the Persephone archetype person has matured and entered the Queen of the Underworld energy.   When the Queen of the Underworld energy is tapped into, the Persephone archetype person can become a great teacher and act as a Priestess to others going through their own ordeals and help lead others down their spiritual paths.   After all, the energy of the Underworld is the energy of delving into the depths of the self, learning more about the self, and beginning to walk your intended spiritual path!   The Queen of the Underworld, as the Mature Persephone archetype, is both the caretaker of the Dead (as Persephone did care for the Dead in the Underworld) and the bridge between life and death.   Tapping into this energy is to be the caretaker, the teacher, the Priestess, and the Queen.   The matured Persephone archetype is truly the Princess who has grown into being the Queen, capable of taking care of not only herself but others!

Now, you may wonder how you can balance the energy of the Princess and the Queen.   The answer to that is even when the Persephone archetype has matured into the Queen of the Underworld; the Maiden has not completely gone away.   The Mature Persephone archetype is both the Maiden and the Queen, just as Persephone the Goddess still returns to her mother each Spring and to her husband each Autumn.   The beauty of the Persephone archetype when matured is that the Queen is still capable of tapping into the youthful Maiden energy to be more empathetic to those who are stuck in immaturity.   They can also tap into youthful energy to help others heal their own inner child!

I hope you have enjoyed this short exploration of the Persephone archetype and the energy of balancing the Princess and the Queen.   What is the most interesting thing about the Persephone archetype to you?  Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!
