Welcome back to White Rose of Avalon, my Darlings. Today’s post is my list of recommendations for underrated horror films! As a note, none of these films are ranked, they are simply ten horror films that I find to be underrated for various reasons. Without further ado, let’s look at the list!
I KNOW WHO KILLED ME (2007)
~I know that not everyone will consider this 2000s Lindsay Lohan film to be horror, but I think this definitely rides the border between thriller and horror. It is the story of a young woman who had gone missing, and when she returned, she claimed that she was not the same person. This leads to an interesting tale of discovery and torture that is really interesting. It may not be the best film, but it is a very fun watch indeed!
THE RAGE: CARRIE 2 (1999)
~Okay, so I am honestly a big fan of the sequel to the original Carrie. Obviously, it is not as good as the original, but that does not mean that it is not a really enjoyable teen horror film! I really like the love story elements in this film, which sets it apart from the original.
SKELETON KEY (2005)
~I very rarely see this film talked about, but this New Orleans tale of hauntings on the Bayou is one that I have enjoyed since it came out. This film has both Voodoo and Hoodoo discussed and has a very interesting historical and magical plotline!
REST STOP (2006)
~This film is incredibly low-rated, but it is well worth a watch. The story follows a young woman fighting a serial killer at a rest stop, as the title suggests! While it is not a masterpiece, it is a competently made low-budget horror film.
ESCAPE FROM TOMORROW (2013)
~I am really glad that I discovered this film earlier this year. The story of how it was made is really iconic, as the film was shot on location at Disney World without Disney knowing about it! The sheer gall of doing this makes it worth a watch. I will admit it is very surrealistic and not for everyone, but if you want a surreal fever dream of a man going mad while on vacation with his family, this is for you!
BITTEN (2008)
~I love this vampire comedy horror starring Jason Mewes! It is the story of a paramedic who saves a young woman only to find out she is a vampire after they begin living together! The story is one crazy wild ride, and it is very re-watchable.
HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL (1999)
~I think this is one of the underrated remakes of old horror films. I adore the original, I mean, Vicent Price is always amazing, but the remake is very fun. If you have not seen it in a while, I suggest giving it a rewatch!
HOUSE OF WAX (2005)
~Another remake of the 2000s that is often hated, while it is not the Vincent Price version or the even earlier 1930s version, it is not trying to be. I really appreciate the way the plotline unfolds in this version of the story! Plus, the cast is such a nostalgic set of early 2000s names, making it all the more fun for the nostalgia.
THE LORDS OF SALEM (2012)
~I love this Rob Zombie film about evil witches and the haunting of a radio DJ. The story is very surreal and even confusing at some points, but it is very fun to watch. I love this one for the vibes alone, as it is great to have on in the background even if you are not really watching, but the film is very absorbing if you do pay attention to the plot!
31 (2016)
~Finally, another Rob Zombie film. This one is about a group that hosts an event to kill and torture people who have been kidnapped on the night of Halloween as a tradition. If the kidnapped people survive until sunrise, they will be let go. Otherwise, anything is fair game for the entertainment of this sadistic group! I love this film for its unique plot line, and it is an often overlooked Rob Zombie film, which I think is sad.
~I hope you have enjoyed this list. Did I inspire you to go and check out any of these films? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!
