Welcome back to White Rose of Avalon, my Darlings. Today’s blog post is about Seals as Spirit animals. I have felt a strong pull to Seals lately, with them appearing in my dreams and my connection to Selkies growing ever stronger! That is why it felt like the ideal time to explore Seals as spirit animals.
According to The Secret Power of Spirit Animals by Skye Alexander, the strengths of Seal Spirit Animals are Imagination, Intuition, Creativity, and Endurance. According to the same book, the weaknesses of Seal Spirit Animals are Dreaminess, Impressionability, and Impracticality. These associations are largely due to the connection between these things and water, which is the main domain of Seals! I do want to note that I do not personally view dreaminess as just a weakness. Yes, being overly dreamy can make you distractable, but it is also what serves to enhance creativity, which is listed as a strength in the same book. As you can see, I think dreaminess is an aspect of Seal Spirit Animal associations that can be both a strength and a weakness, meaning that I would prefer to discuss it outside of those categories! While I do love to use this book as a resource, I wanted to give a nuanced examination of my thoughts on those associations!
I would also add to the list of associations that I tend to think of Seal Spirit Animals as being linked to Transformation, Liminality, and Heart-Centered Soul Intentions. These are things that I associate with Seals because I am fascinated with Selkies! I have these associations because Selkies are able to transform by putting on or taking off their Seal Skins. They are also Faery Women who live primarily in water, which is a Liminal portal between the worlds. Finally, Selkies who have been caught by a human and have their Seal Skin stolen have their hearts forever longing for the Sea, which they miss deeply. Hence, their hearts are calling them to return to the Sea, which they do when they finally find their Seal Skins!
At the end of the day, Seals call to us as Spirit Animals when we need to follow our intuition, gain creative insights, increase our creativity, need the endurance to follow through on our tasks, and have the courage to follow our dreams. They will also call to us when we exist too much in our Dreamworlds as a reminder that we must live in the present moment, not just our dreams. That is the balance taking place when we learn from Seals! When I connect with the energy of the Selkies, I feel like I am claiming my own authenticity, which is also what I feel when I dream of Seals.
