Welcome back to White Rose of Avalon my Darlings. Today’s post is my own very biased ranking of all the seasons of The Vampire Diaries’ companion series The Originals. I love this series just as much as its predecessor, and am so glad to have the chance to rank it! Without further ado, let’s get onto the ranking.
Number 5: SEASON 4
~I want to preface this by saying that I love all the seasons of this series, but I have my definite favorites, and season four is not among my favorites. The time jump makes for an intriguing plot point, but I think the time jump is much better utilized between seasons four and five than between seasons three and four. That being said, it is nice seeing Klaus and Hope bond, which is the highlight of this season for me!
Number 4: SEASON 2
~Season two is largely a follow-up season that builds upon the framework of season one very well. I have it ranked so low mostly just because the other seasons I ranked above it have some factors that make them stand out. This is a very strong season that introduces a lot of interesting factors that raise the stakes, most notably Dahlia as an antagonist. We also get introduced to Freya, as the witchy sister of the Original family, and see both Kol and Rebecca explore their own magical gifts! What we get for season two gets expanded upon in great ways in season three.
Number 3: SEASON 3
~This season mostly gets this high of a ranking mostly for the inclusion of Aurora and Triston. It is a very high-stakes season that makes for the ideal transition point between the early era of the series and the latter half. Season three deftly expands upon themes that were explored in season two. There is also so much witchy goodness, with Davina having much more power at this point, that makes this a very fun season to watch!
Number 2: SEASON 1
~I have long been a believer that the first seasons of series tend to suffer due to setup taking up much of the run time. However, being a second show in a universe, this premiere season does not have those issues, instead working as a great ride through the tale of Klaus dealing with learning he’s gonna be a father! I love the season for introducing Klaus’ backstory in New Orleans in great detail and for exploring the love between Rebekah and Marcel that would become a staple of the series. The season sets up character dynamics without getting too bogged down in setup, as there are high stakes and a payoff in the end!
Number 1: SEASON 5
~A possibly controversial ranking, as I know there are many mixed feelings. I am sad at the ending Klaus and Elijah get in the series, but it is a very bittersweet and heartfelt way to conclude the journey the show took viewers on! But, I must be honest and state that my main reason for this being my number one comes down to one word, CAROLINE. That’s right this is the season that we get to see a lot of Klaus and Caroline interaction, and get an understanding of what they could have been like as a couple! Honestly, we were robbed of having them be a legitimate couple, but alas, at least we have plenty of scenes of them together this season. I truly think that The Originals would have had such an iconic couple had they chosen to have Caroline leave The Vampire Diaries in maybe season six of that show to join season two of The Originals! Anyway, at least we got to see her in the final season, and we get to see her in her role as Headmistress of the Salvatore School, which is really nice. The Salvatore School scenes are there to set up the premise for what would become Legacies, which works well enough. In the end, this season has a tonal shift that shows the end coming for Klaus and his storyline, which gets wrapped up in a tearjerking, but ultimately heartfelt way, as I said above!
