Welcome back to White Rose of Avalon my Darlings. This week’s Femme Fatale Friday is a bit different, as I have decided to focus on how to embrace the upcoming Season of the Witch this Autumn through a very Faery lens. In particular, I am going to be sharing some Faery Queen-inspired advice for making the most of this most magickal season! Since this advice is coming from me, I chose to call this post Faery Enchantress’s Tips, instead of Faery Queen’s Tips. Now, without further ado, let’s look at the five tips!
Tip 1: INDULGE IN SEASONAL FOODS: APPLES, PUMPKINS, CINNAMON, & CLOVE
~One of the first ways to really make the most of having a Faery-inspired Autumn is to indulge in seasonal foods. That means, bring on the apples, pumpkins, and seasonal spices! That also means drinking lots of delicious Autumnal brews. It is truly almost apple cider season and nothing is better than warm apple cider with cinnamon! By indulging in seasonal foods, we are honoring the turning of the cycle of nature and getting in tune with the Earth around us, which is a very important aspect of the Faery Lifestyle.
Tip 2: RESEARCH DARKER & MORE SCARY FAERIES: BANSHEES, THE WASHER AT THE FORD, JENNY GREENTEETH
~Another beautiful way to truly embrace Faery energy for the Season of the Witch is to begin to research the darker side of Faeries. This means looking at older Faerylore and legends. It also means looking into true stories of what people who believed in the terror of Faerylands have done because of their beliefs, like the tragic tale of Bridget Cleary! While people often first think of the Fae through the Victorian Flower Faery lens, there is so much more to the Fae. The older folklore often reads more like horror stories than Disney. That being said, I think it is equally important to remember when researching that a lot of Faerylore was first written down after the spread of Christianity was set on demonizing anything not inherently Christian. We must approach all of the old Faery stories with nuance, as the Church chose to include the Fae in their teachings, as they could not stop people from believing. This is where we get the Fae as Fallen Angels (essentially Earth-bound lesser Demons) or the Fae as children of Eve hidden from God. So, yes you will find many tales of horror in old Faery stories, and there are many real dangers in Faery, but some are products of their time! I hope this tip has primed you to get ready to do some digging into the scarier side of the Fae with a nuanced lens.
Tip 3: READ & WATCH FAIRYTALE HORROR: THE ORIGINS OF FAIRYTALES & SCARY FAIRYTALE FILMS
~Other than researching darker Faeries, you can also deep dive into the origins of fairytales. Fairytales are often seen as simply stories for children today, but this is not where these tales began. The oldest of fairytales are incredibly dark and horrific, full of murder and abuse. This makes looking into older fairytales a great way to see just how scary Faeries can be! There is no shortage of horror films, especially low-budget and B-movies, that look to the older origins of fairytales to create truly gruesome experiences for viewers. It is perfectly logical to turn old fairytales into horror films, as they were essentially horror stories to begin with!
Tip 4: EMBRACE THE LINK BETWEEN FAERIES & VAMPIRES
~So, this may seem like an odd one if you are not familiar with the varied myriad of Faeries. However, many species of Faeries are vampiric in nature, with Leanan Sidhe feeding on their lovers during sex, being a prime example. There are also vampiric Water Faeries, like Vampire Mermaids, related to the age-old Sirens. You see, the idea of Vampires and Faeries being linked in some ways is not something that was invented in recent decades. It existed long before Sookie Stackhouse found out she was Fae and that was why she was attracting the attention of so many vampires in True Blood. I know that some people found that part of the story over the top, but it truly is building upon old folklore!
Tip 5: CONNECT WITH YOUR FAERY ANCESTORS
~Finally, one of my favorite ways to have a very Faery-inspired Spooky Season is to connect with your Faery Ancestors! After all, the time leading up to Samhain is all about remembering the Dead and honoring our ancestors. So, why not include your own Faery Ancestors in your Autumnal Ancestor practices? This may be my favorite tip on this list, as you can easily do this during meditations! You can also build an Ancestor Altar dedicated specifically to any Faery Ancestors you may have. There is no wrong way to honor your Ancestors, just do what feels intuitively right with the intention of showing them love, and it will likely be appreciated.
