Welcome back to White Rose of Avalon my Darlings. Today’s post is my own very biased ranking of all seven seasons of True Blood. As a lover of Vampire media, I have long adored this HBO classic. In honor of the burgeoning of Spooky Season, as September is fast approaching, I have decided to rank this very fun supernatural fantasy gem! Without further ado, let’s look at my ranking.
Number 7: SEASON 7
~Of course, the final season would rank last. It is a major step down from the earlier seasons, but I still really enjoyed it, possibly more than other fans. I was disappointed with the choices made, especially where character deaths and having Sookie end up with some random unnamed character we never met are concerned. Without giving spoilers for the books, I felt that Sookie had a much better ending in the book series, especially where romance was concerned. That being said, I loved the conclusion of Jessica’s story, which I find to be the sweetest ending of the series!
Number 6: SEASON 6
~Season six is a strange mixed bag of a season. I genuinely liked the storyline of having Sookie be pursued by an ancient Vampire Faery, as that seemed very fitting and super epic! The complexity of Warlow as a character was very intriguing, especially with his backstory being tied to Lilth. That being said, the Billith story was interesting, if strange. It definitely does seem to present itself as a transition season overall.
Number 5: SEASON 5
~Season five is a really odd one, with a lot of the story revolving around the Vampire Authority. I really did enjoy getting to deepen the lore of the Vampires in this universe. Not to mention, we have so much more Faery goodness, which is always a plus for me! This is possibly the season where we see the most of the Faeries, given that they are running that Faery Nightclub in this season. In fact, any of the episodes that feature the Faery Nightclub and a lot of Faeries are among some of my favorites of the series!
Number 4: SEASON 1
~Okay, so it may be controversial to rank season one so low. However, I really thought that the introductory season suffers from what most first seasons do. That is the fact that it does a great deal of set-up. That being said, this is better than many first seasons of long-running shows as the season has a complete wrapped-up story arc. I think that the reason that the story is wrapped up so well is largely due to how closely they stuck to the first book of the series in the first season!
Number 3: SEASON 2
~Season two is super iconic for the Maenad storyline for me! That is my absolute favorite aspect of this season, which is funny, as that is such a tiny part of the second book. I love how the show chose to flesh out this plot, making it the highlight of the whole season!
Number 2: SEASON 4
~Okay, this may be another controversial ranking. I have always adored season four! It gives us so much Faery goodness, with Sookie beginning the season in Faeryland, and meeting her Faery Godmother. It also has the Sookie and Eric romance plotline, another favorite, which we get sadly very little of in the series as a whole. This again differs from the books, where Sookie and Eric have a very long-lived romance in the book series! Finally, it has the witch plot line, which I love so much. It gets major bonus points for having one of the funniest lines in the whole series “Eric, you just killed my Faery Godmother.” This is followed up by an absolutely hilarious adventure of Eric high on Faery Blood!
Number 1: SEASON 3
~Of course, I just had to choose season three as my number one! It has the introduction of some awesome characters like Alcide and Russell Edgington. We get to see Sookie trying to find Bill when he is kidnapped by the King of Mississippi. There is an excellent storyline of Sam finding his birth family. Not to mention, a good dose of Sophie Ann, the Vampire Queen of Louisiana, a favorite side character of mine. Best of all, this is the introduction of Sookie having Faery Blood!
