Welcome back to White Rose of Avalon my Darlings. Today’s post is a list of some of my favorite films to watch to ease into the magick of Autumn! These are nine excellent films to watch in August and September to really begin to feel the oncoming Spooky Season vibes. After all, Spooky Season is the Happiest Time of the Year in my opinion! I have chosen not to rank these, as I just wanted to give a good list of fun films to watch.
HOCUS POCUS (1993)
~Yes, I just had to begin this list with one of my favorite Halloween films ever! I have already watched this film this year, actually on August 1, the night of Lughnasadh, as that is the first harvest festival. This tale of the Sanderson sisters is a must-watch for all of the Spooky Season lovers each year!
PRACTICAL MAGIC (1998)
~I watch this movie all year long, usually every couple of weeks to be honest. I really really adore the tale of the Owens women and their very magical bloodline. I cannot say enough good things about this very cozy film about a family of witches and the many loves they have! This is an especially fun watch given that the new sequel film has officially been announced.
THE CRAFT (1996)
~Such an amazing film about teenage witches. This one gets a bit darker than many of the other cozy films on this list, but it is such a fun ride to watch the quartet of young witches learn about their own magical abilities! While the last third of the film is definitely a horror film, the first two-thirds are quite cozy to me, hence the inclusion on this list.
BEETLEJUICE (1988)
~You cannot skip this Tim Burton classic in your Spooky Season rotation! I especially recommend the re-watch of this one before the sequel premieres early next month. That is one of my most anticipated new movies of this year!
CORPSE BRIDE (2005)
~Another Tim Burton romp, this one is such a fun Gothic Victorian Fairytale. I love this story of Emily, and always felt sad she and Victor do not end up together. But I also am so happy that she finally found her peace in the end!
CORALINE (2009)
~This was another film I watched on August 1, as a double feature with Hocus Pocus. I just adore this spooky fairytale about a young girl who finds herself in a very creepy Otherworld fighting against her evil Other Mother!
MALEFICENT (2014)
~My favorite Disney villain of all time had to make the list. It is such a cute film that has a very heart-warming ending with Maleficent and Aurora as a sweet mother and daughter pair by the end!
DEATH BECOMES HER (1992)
~This is a favorite 90s spooky film of mine! I love seeing Meryl Steep and Goldie Hawn going head-to-head in this dark battle over a man who is not worth their time. It is a film about their chaotic rivalry more than anything else!
LISA FRANKENSTEIN (2024)
~Finally, last but not least, I had to give love to my favorite film released this year, so far! I really adore this movie as a very spooky romance between a teenage girl and the boy she brought back to life. I cannot wait to re-watch this one, as it is a fabulous Diablo Cody masterpiece!
