Modron, Faery Queen Goddess of Late Summer & Early Autumn

Welcome back to White Rose of Avalon my Darlings.   This week’s Femme Fatale Friday post is about Modron as a Faery Queen Goddess whose energy is very prominent at the end of Summer and going into early Autumn!   If you are on my Patreon, you will know that a couple of weeks ago I wrote about how I think there is a Faery Queen Goddess who represents each Wheel of the Year holiday.   For Lughnasadh, and therefore the whole season between August 1st and the Autumnal Equinox, is associated with Modron in my opinion.

Modron is well known for being an aspect of Morgan le Fay, as in earlier Welsh Celtic tales it is Modron who is the wife of King Uriens and mother of Owain.   We know that these two roles are given to Morgan le Fay in the Arthurian legends, serving as proof that they are in fact one and the same!   Other than that, Modron is best known as the Welsh Celtic Mother Goddess who is the Mother of Mabon.

The story of Mabon is the story of a lost child, who is quested for by Knights, and finally found safe.   It is stated that he would later go on to be a great hero and even is often thought of as a Solar Deity.   Modron is most often seen to be the ideal Mother Goddess of the Celts, and even often can be viewed as the traditional Goddess of the Land whose life cycle is tied to the cycle of the seasons.   This makes her a Faery Queen Goddess who is most easy to relate to the traditional New Age view of the Goddess as Maiden, Mother, and Crone.   In fact, I believe that this view of her is hinted at in Evangeline Walton’s Mabinogion Tetralogy.    She does hint at Arawn’s wife being a Faery Queen Goddess who is seen as mother turned wife turned mother again, which reminds me of this endless cycle of the Goddess evolving throughout the Wheel of the Year.    However, Walton never firmly names this Goddess as Modron, but I personally read her as being Modron so I had to mention it!    However, with that most of what we know about Modron is covered.

Her fertility, nurturance, and loving nature lead me to find her to be deeply associated with this time of year.    She is the perfect loving embrace to mother us through the change of seasons, going into the darker and cozier time of year!    I hope you have enjoyed this short look at Modron.   What is your favorite thing about Modron?   Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!
