Could Our Favorite Fairytale Protagonists be Faeries?

Welcome back to White Rose of Avalon my Darlings.   Today’s post is about looking at fairytale protagonists as possibly being Faeries themselves.   This is no new concept for me to examine, but today I wanted to go over a few examples and show some threads of commonality as to why I think so many fairytale protagonists could be truly Faeries.    I will go over five examples in small sections below.   Without further ado, let’s look at the fairytale protagonists!

CINDERELLA

~Cinderella has a Faery Godmother who makes sure that she is able to make it to her Ball and meet the Prince.   However, there are versions of the fairytale where it is stated that Cinderella’s mother was friends with the Faery Godmother.   That leads me to suspect that Cinderella’s mother was in fact a Faery herself, making Cinderella a Faery also!   Furthermore, this may explain why Cinderella so easily caught the Prince’s attention, as she had a truly Otherworldly beauty.   Not to mention, there is the fact that her foot is apparently very small, which seems to be a unique trait in that Kingdom, maybe making this a Faery trait.

RAPUNZEL

~Rapunzel was imprisoned by a Witch because of the actions of her parents, who stole from the Witch’s garden.   So, I wonder who her mother may have actually been.   In most versions, she is simply stated to have been a poor woman, but I think that she may have been a Faery, hence her bravery in stealing from the Witch’s garden.   Once again, Rapunzel’s mother being a Faery would make her daughter one.   Plus Rapunzel’s ability to heal with her tears is a very Faery ability!

BEAUTY & THE BEAST

~I have always questioned whether or not Beauty’s mother was the Faery woman who cursed the Beast for his hubris.   There is always a question as to whether the Beast or Beauty are related to Faeries in many of the old versions of the story that seem to lurk beneath the surface.   I love the idea of Beauty’s true mother having been the one to curse the Beast serving to ensure that her daughter would become the Queen because she would be the true love of this Prince who would be King one day!

SNOW WHITE

~Snow White’s older version is that her own mother is the Evil Queen, not her stepmother.   So in the oldest versions, it is her mother who has the ability to change her shape, which is an iconic form of Faery magick, called Glamour.   That to me means that Snow White’s mother may have been a Faery rather than a Witch all along!   That would also explain why Snow White would so easily be accepted by the Dwarfs, as they would be a Faery race accepting another Faery into their ranks!   It could also explain why Snow White was able to survive each attempt on her life, maybe she inherited a Faery’s immortality.

SLEEPING BEAUTY

~The most obvious example of a fairytale protagonist being a Faery herself is Sleeping Beauty, as she is literally cursed by a Dark and Evil Faery.   I have long suspected that the Dark Faery was either her own mother or that her mother was the sister of the Dark Faery.   This makes sense, as Faery Women are often married to human Kings to cement their sovereignty over the land in old faerylore!   So, Sleeping Beauty would be a true Faery Princess, in every sense of the word, in my opinion.   Once again, this could explain why she is able to just fall into a cursed sleep instead of dying.   With her cursed sleep lasting a century, we can also see that is a good way to explain how her romance with the Prince may not have been insta-love, but instead, a love story that began before the curse and continued when she woke.    After all, a century is not that long for a Faery!

~So, my whole analysis of the possibility of these fairytale protagonists being Faery themselves hinges on their mothers being Faery women.   As there are so many examples of Faery women having children with humans, it is not an uncommon idea that these fairytale protagonists would be the products of this union.   Plus, I think it can easily be seen to fit the narratives and makes their development in the stories that much more understandable.   I hope you have enjoyed this look at fairytale protagonists as Faeries.   What are your favorite fairytale protagonists?   Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!
