My Favorite Witchy Protagonists

Welcome back to White Rose of Avalon my Darlings.   This week’s Femme Fatale Friday is all about some of my favorite Witchy Protagonists in literature!   I have chosen three very different Witchy characters who are the central characters of at least one book in a series for this post.   All three of these characters do also appear in television adaptations of their respective series, but I will be focusing on their original literary versions here! I will not be ranking the characters, as all of them are great, but instead, I will be going over why I think each of them makes a great central figure for their respective narratives.

SAVANNAH LEVINE

~Savannah is one of the lead characters of Kelley Armstrong’s Women of the Otherworld series (also simply called The Otherworld series).   She first appeared in the second book of the series, as a twelve-year-old girl.  As the books progressed, we as an audience get to see her grow up, becoming a very passionate and brave twenty-one-year-old witch.   I loved getting to know this character throughout the series, and especially adored the final three novels, which she narrated!   The series had a total of thirteen books, so she narrated books eleven through thirteen.   That makes for a total of twelve books in the series where she was either mentioned, appeared, or was the central character, giving the reader ample time to really get to know her!

ROWAN MAYFAIR

~Rowan is the main character of Anne Rice’s Mayfair Witches books.   She is a doctor, who found out her true parentage when her adoptive mother died.   This is how she got involved with the rest of the Mayfair family, moving to New Orleans to get to know her family and learn about the magic she had within herself.   Rowan is a very intelligent and resilient character, capable of overcoming intense trauma in the second novel of the trilogy!   She even got to have a bit of a whirlwind love affair in the first book and remained married to her husband by the end of the third book, so at the very least her romantic life in the books became pretty stable, even amidst the chaos of the plot.

DIANA BISHOP

~Diana Bishop is my favorite of the three characters of this post, even though I said I was not ranking them, I could not resist stating that Diana is my favorite!    She appears in Deborah Harkness’s All Souls Series.   Diana is an academic, a historian, and professor, who is from a long line of witches, with her ancestor Bridget Bishop being the first person hung during the Salem Witch Trials.   In this series, Diana narrates all but the fourth novel, and this tells an epic tale of Diana coming into her powers as she falls in love with Matthew Clairmont, an ancient vampire!    The first three books of the series take on a huge mystery that involves all of the species of creatures in the series, Witches, Vampires, and Daemons.   Diana appears in the fourth book, but is not the sole focus, as that book tells the story of Matthew’s Vampire son, Marcus.   Diana is a very intelligent and strong-willed protagonist whom I adore!   I am currently reading the brand-new fifth book in the series, and am thoroughly enjoying it, and I will be reviewing it here very soon.

~I hope you have enjoyed this look at three great Witchy Protagonists.   Who is your favorite central Witchy character of a book or series?   Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!
