Ranking ‘The Lives of the Mayfair Witches’ Trilogy

Welcome back to White Rose of Avalon my Darlings.   Today’s blog post is my own ranking of The Lives of the Mayfair Witches trilogy of books by Anne Rice.   I have recently re-read the series, well I actually re-read the first book last fall and just re-read the second two this past week.   I want to also preface this by saying that although I love this book series, it is a very heavy read at times and can be very disturbing so it is not for everyone.   But without further ado, let’s look at my ranking!

Number 3: Lasher by Anne Rice

~The second book of the trilogy is the toughest read of all.   It has a lot of trauma inflicted upon the main protagonist, Rowan Mayfair.   Plus there is also a lot of a very uncomfortable romantic entanglement between an adult and a very young teenager.   I wanted to bring this up, in case that is a possible trigger warning for some people, as is everything that happens with Rowan and her trauma during the course of this novel!   While all of these things are rough to read about, the novel is exceedingly well-written and I adore this book along with the whole series, but it is definitely my least favorite due to some of the difficult subject matter.

Number 2: The Witching Hour by Anne Rice

~The first book of the series is an excellent introduction to this trilogy.   However, I will note that it is an insanely long book, one of Anne Rice’s longest, at over 1000 pages!   That being said, that long length of the novel is a great way to fully flesh out the characters we are going to be following through the rest of the series.

Number 1: Taltos by Anne Rice

~My number one book of this series just had to be the final novel of the trilogy!   Honestly, re-reading this series has made me realize that this ranking, second book as least favorite, first book middle, and final book as number one, is my personal ranking for pretty much all of my favorite trilogies.   This is because you need a strong introduction, the second book should build upon that but there can often be a lot of emotions to handle, and the final book should be a truly epic finale in my opinion!   This book has a lot of interesting historical backstories being fleshed out along with the continuation of Rowan’s story and that of the rest of the Mayfair family and how they are all coping with the traumas of the second book.   That being said there is also a very uncomfortable pregnancy of a very young teenager, which is a continuation of the uncomfortable stuff I mentioned about the second book.   So, I just had to mention that as another possible trigger warning, as is all of the incest, which is very common in the Mayfair family.   At the end of the day, I am a huge fan of Anne Rice and her work, and I adore these books, but I know that these things can be a tough read, hence why I felt I should be honest with my readers in case you had not read the books!

~I hope you have enjoyed my ranking of The Lives of the Mayfair Witches by Anne Rice.   What is your favorite book in the series?   Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!
