Welcome back to White Rose of Avalon my Darlings. Today’s post is my incredibly exciting announcement, that I am published! That is what I did, I went and got myself published in the Journal of Medicinal Plant Conservation.
You may wonder how this all came about for this Enchantress. Well you see, it all goes back to when I was finishing up my Herbs of Avalon nine-month course taught by the amazing Suzanne O’Gara, of Alchemy of Avalon, last November. We were given the option of doing a final project as part of that class. Being the overachiever I am, I immediately knew I wanted to do a bonus project, stating that I wanted to write a Monograph (that is like a term paper on a specific plant) on Centuary, as I had grown very attached to her, and she is not a plant written about very often.
Suzanne was delighted that I wanted to write about Centuary. When I turned in my assignment and she read it over, she suggested that with a little editing, the Monograph was good enough for journal publication! I was stunned that my first Monograph was so good that my teacher thought it could be published. Well, it also turned out that around that time, United Plant Savers, an excellent Plant Conservation Society, had announced an open call for submissions for the 2024 journal they publish annually.
So it was with this knowledge that at the very beginning of February I submitted my Centuary Monograph for publication in the Journal of Medicinal Plant Conservation! This is after I had already made my edits and joined United Plant Savers, of course. I knew I wanted to join United Plant Savers since I first heard about their important work, and the knowledge of being able to submit my Centuary Monograph for publication made it the ideal time to join.
Now, I actually have known since only a couple weeks after submitting that I was in fact going to be published, as I had been asked to provide a brief bio to accompany my article. But, I did not want to jinx it, so I did not talk about it much to anyone besides my husband. Then yesterday, I got a message from Suzanne, who told me she just received her physical copy of the journal (only members get physical copies, but it is a free download for anyone online) and happened upon my Monograph! I have been feeling amazing and so blessed ever since I found out that my first-ever work published by a respected journal was out for the world to see.
I hope you have enjoyed reading this little story of how I got published in a journal. Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!
