Mothers of Witchy Bloodlines: Hereditary Witches in 90s Pop Culture!

Welcome back to White Rose of Avalon my Darlings.   This week’s Femme Fatale Friday is going to be focused on the Mothers of Witchy Bloodlines, specifically the two pop-culture examples from the 1990s!   These two Mothers of Witchy Bloodlines are none other than Maria Owens and Melinda Warren.    I will discuss each in her own section below to focus on how she is an ongoing source of remembrance and inspiration to future generations of her bloodline.   Without further ado, let’s look at these Witchy Ancestresses!

MARIA OWENS from PRACTICAL MAGIC (1995, book & 1998, film)

~Maria Owens is such a deeply iconic aspect of even the earliest book in the Practical Magic series, along with the film based upon it.   The opening of the film kicks off with Aunt Franny telling the story of their ancestress, who was nearly hanged for being a witch.   The specter of Maria Owens seems to always be in the background in the first novel, with her portrait being gifted to Kylie by the Aunts and famously scaring Gillian, before she realized that the portrait seemed to become a protector of the bedroom the two shared!   As Maria Owens was such a fascinating figure for many fans of the books and film, it was a delight for Alice Hoffman to release Maria Owens’s story, Magic Lessons in 2020.   We got to learn a more fleshed-out version of how Maria was raised, where the family Grimoire began, who the father of her daughter was, her true love story, why the rope broke when she was nearly hanged, and the origins of the family curse!   The family curse is on those who love members of the Owens family, as they die tragically.   This is sadly the primary influence Maria had on her family, even if this was not her intent.    Her presence can be felt throughout the series, as a nearly legendary figure whose story is always taught to each new generation, providing inspiration on their own magickal journeys!

MELINDA WARREN from CHARMED (1998)

~Melinda Warren is the beginning of the Charmed bloodline.   She is where the famed powers of the Charmed Ones originated!    Gifted with all three powers possessed by the Halliwell sisters, telekinesis, freezing time, and premonitions, she would pass these gifts through the generations.   Although she was burned as a Witch, she was able to take back her powers and trap Matthew Tate, her lover and a Warlock who had betrayed her, in a locket.   This is where we get the only appearance of Melinda in the series, as she is conjured from the past to help defeat Matthew Tate again when he is accidentally released from his locket in the episode The Witch is Back from season one!    In the season three Halloween special, All Halliwell’s Eve, the Charmed Ones are sent back in time, helping to deliver a very special baby, that turns out to be Melinda Warren herself.    Melinda is referenced and talked about many times in the series, and her presence is felt most profoundly as the originator of the family line, and as the one who began the famed Book of Shadows!   She is often felt around, even when not discussed, as the ultimate Matriarch of the Halliwell line.

Special Mention: EMILY BENNETT & QETSIYAH from THE VAMPIRE DIARIES (2009)

~These two are characters I just could not resist mentioning, but only as a special mention since they did not come into being until the 2000s, as neither appeared in the book series.   But Emily Bennett and her ancestor Qetsiyah are true ancestresses to the Bennett magickal bloodline.   Bonnie even had visions and a deep-rooted connection to Emily in the show’s first season, as part of her beginning to come into her powers!   Qetsiyah is a much more ancient ancestress of the Bennett bloodline, and even when she returns to life for a time, she has much more of her energy focused on Doppelgängers than her descendants, which is why I consider Emily to be the true maternal influence in the Bennett line.   Emily continued to watch over future generations, like the other two Witchy Ancestresses I discussed in depth here!

~I hope you have enjoyed this look at some magickal and maternal women whose characters provided inspiration to their family lines.   Who is your favorite pop-culture Mother of Witchy Bloodlines?   Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!
