Welcome back to White Rose of Avalon my Darlings. Today’s post is about how Faery Sexuality and the Rites of Spring serve to nourish the land. Sexuality itself is a symbol of nature’s abundance and all Fae celebrate sex in their wild freedom! I will be going over different species of Fae and how they are entwined with sexuality in individual sections below. Without further ado, let’s look at Faery Sexuality and the Rites of Spring!
ELVES
~Elves are a very diverse species of Fae folk. The aspect of Elves being related to Faery Sexuality is often seen in fantasy works, where Elves are oft depicted as perfectly beautiful and sexually alluring Fae folk. The energy of allure draws others into their orbit, be they human or Fae, and that is why I wanted to briefly discuss Elves in this section. It should be remembered that Elf is also often an umbrella term, like Faery or Fae, meaning that they can be seen in very diverse ways. The other interesting aspect of Elves and sexuality is that they are also shown to be very innocent and childish, very similar to the way that Nymphs are often portrayed, which leads me to the next Faery I want to focus on.
NYMPHS
~I could not do a post about Faeries and sexuality without writing about Nymphs. Nymphs are literally the namesake for ‘nymphomania’ which is an obsession with sex! As I mentioned above, like Elves, Nymphs are both known to be sexually alluring as well as being known for an innate innocence. That is a running theme with Faery Sexuality in general to be honest, the Fae are so deeply connected to the utter wildness of nature Herself, which means that the embracing of Sexuality is a part of the natural order of things, it is the beauty of fertility and a large part of the Rites of Spring as a symbol of how sexuality and fertility of the body is related to the fertility of the land. The Faery Woman is the fertility of the land made manifest in physical form! Nymphs certainly have a deep connection to the cycles of nature, being embodiments and protectors of natural things like woodlands, waters, and trees.
MERMAIDS
~Possibly one, if not the most, iconic of all Faery Women known for sexuality is the Mermaid! I have written about Mermaids and the Mermaid Archetype several times here on White Rose of Avalon, as I have always adored Mermaids with a very special affinity and the Mermaid Archetype is one that has been a very active part of my life forever. Clearly, these watery Faery Women are symbolic of the fertility of the Sea and the depths of emotions. This leads to Mermaids being seen as symbolic of love, beauty, sexuality, and all emotions! Because Mermaids are so known for their watery and sexual nature, they can easily be seen as symbols of the Rites of Spring, of nourishing the fertile land, just as the water nourishes the land to yield crops. In many ways, I think watery Fae and earth Fae are the most potent when we think of fertility and creativity for this reason!
FAERY QUEENS & FAERY KINGS
~The Faery Queens & Kings are the last type of Fae that I would like to focus on for this post about Faery Sexuality. Faery Queens are the supreme figures of the Fae courts, often even more prevalent than Faery Kings. It is very common in old Faerylore to read tales of Faery Queens and Kings taking human lovers into the courts of Faerie. It is also very common to hear tales told of the raucous sexuality and sexual parties held during Faery fetes! That is why in many ways the Queens and Kings of Faery are often so associated with Faery sexuality on a grand scale. We even see some nods to this in Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream where the Faery King Oberon instructs Puck to place a love spell on the Faery Queen Titania, forcing her to fall in love with Bottom (while he has the head of a donkey), all in a ploy to distract her!
~I hope you have enjoyed this look at some different aspects of Faery Sexuality and how it can relate to the abundance and fertility of Spring. What is your favorite aspect of Faery Sexuality? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!
